As Warwick continues to be a targeted by ‘phishing’ emails (attempts to gather personal information by fraudulent means) IT Services will shortly be introducing additional filtering to flag messages which appear to be ‘phishing’. Once implemented, suspected phishing emails will have the phrase **Suspected Phishing Email** added to the Subject line.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus Licence Renewal

The current licence for Kaspersky Anti-Virus Software will expire on 31 March 2011. Over the coming weeks a new version of the software will be available, offering greater protection and improved performance. To renew the software:

For ITS Managed Desktops

The new Kaspersky Anti-Virus client will install when you log in on, or after, the date of release and install automatically. This should take approximately 10 minutes to install and will require your machine to be rebooted to complete the installation. It is very important that you do this, as the new software will not be protecting your workstation until you have done so.

For ITS Managed Laptops

Please remember that the Anti-Virus software needs to be renewed on both the on-campus and off-campus partition.

Non Managed Desktops

Any customer using a non-ITS managed machine (workstation or server) must apply a new licence key before this date to ensure they continue to receive definition updates and remain protected.

If you have any questions about updating this software please contact the Helpdesk on 73737.

Increased Virus Activity

Over the last few days, IT Services has seen an increase in virus activity on machines across campus.  This seems to be as a result of infected USB drives, which are being moved from PC to PC. To prevent the spread of viruses in this way, IT Services will be disabling the auto-run feature on IT Services managed workstations. Please note that this will also stop CDs and other USB devices (e.g. cameras) from auto running, so you will need to use them via a Windows Explorer window. The update will take place on Monday afternoon (7 February) and will not affect the use of the workstation.

IT Services recommends that all USB drives, and other external storage drives, are scanned for viruses on a regular basis.
