Warwick Law School’s Markus Wagner and LLM Alumna Hyoeun Yang both participated at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development High-Level International Investment Agreement, which took place from the 9-11 October 2017 at the Geneva Office of the United Nations.

The conference brought together delegations from dozens of countries, non-governmental organizations and subject matter experts. It took stock of sustainable development-oriented international investment agreement (IIA) reform and shared experiences of the countries that are undergoing such changes. Furthermore, it identified best practices for phase 2 of IIA reform, including substantive, procedural and institutional improvements.

The Queen’s Young Leaders Programme began in 2014 hoping to discover, celebrate and support exceptional young people from across the Commonwealth who are taking the lead in their communities and using their skills to transform lives. In only 3 years, there have already been two winners from Warwick Law School.

Former LLM student Bukola Bolarinwa was presented with the award as recognition of her amazing work with blood donors, to help those living with Sickle Cell in Nigeria. She set up Haima Health Initiative in 2015 to address the blood shortage in Nigeria and lack of regular donors. The organisation encourages people to get tested to know their haemoglobin genotype, carries out free genotype tests and has set up Sickle Cell clubs in schools to inform and educate young people about the condition. So far they have reached over 17, 000 people across the six area councils in Abuja.

Harriet Paige has recently published her debut novel - Man With A Seagull on His Head (Bluemoose Books). She studied BA English and American Literature 1997-2000 and MA Writing 2004-05. Graduate of the Warwick Writing Programme Sophie Mackintosh has secured a publishing deal with Hamish Hamilton for her debut novel The Water Cure following a seven-way auction. For further details, see the press release.

She was awarded the prize for Adventures in Synthetic Fun, an essay exploring the concept of ‘synthetic fun’ coined in the 1960s by Jeremy Sandford, and the changing nature of fun in an era of increasing automation, disputed oppression, widespread affective labour, illusory meritocracy, costly social mobility, divisive politics, and a degraded imagination.

Katy studied on the BA English Literature and Creative Writing and the MA in Writing in the department.

Sally Biddlecombe, Graduate Mechanical Building Services Engineer with Arup, and Rob Sharpley, Project Engineer with Nestlé, have been featured on the website “Tomorrow’s Engineers”, an engineering community-led programme to inspire more young people to consider a careers in engineering.

The pioneering app, developed by Sesinam Dagadu who is originally from Accra, Ghana, gives 8.7 millions of Ghanaians access to ambulance services, even without an internet connection. “SnooCode” allows Ghanaians to navigate using GPS pinpointing without needing traditional address system. Sesinam, founder of SnooCode, won the ‘Entrepreneurial Award’ at the British Council ‘Study UK Alumni Awards 2017’ in recognition of his achievement.

Creative Writing alumna Sohini Basak is the winner of the 2016 Beverly Series for her debut collection of poetry, We Live in the Newness of Small Differences.

Sohini originally from Barrackpore, India studied at Warwick on the MA in Writing in 2013 and was taught by various Warwick academics including Professor David Morley, winner of the Ted Hughes Award for New Poetry. On hearing of Sohini’s success, David said:

‘The key to making poems is surprise in language. I remember with pleasure Sohini Basak’s poetry when I was teaching her poetry at Warwick. Her use of language, line and image always surprised and delighted.

It is no surprise therefore that she has gone on to achieve great things with her poetry. The winning of this prestigious prize and the publication of her first collection is an inspiration to student-poets at Warwick.’
