Warwick Technicians meeting on Progression, Promotion and Recognition

Thanks to those of you who attended last week’s meeting to discuss Recruitment and Visibility issues in more detail.

The next meeting, on Tuesday 17 November, will concentrate on PROMOTION AND PROGRESSION and RECOGNITION. If you are able to attend please email Technicians@warwick.ac.uk and we will send a calendar invite.

We would like you to come to the meeting with ideas on the following:

Promotion and Progression

· What sort of advice and guidance do you feel would be useful for Technicians who wish to be considered for promotion when opportunities arise

· Apart from lack of opportunities in the University, what do you feel are the barriers stopping you from being able to progress your career, ie. development or responsibility

· If you do not wish to progress to a more senior role, what sort of opportunities would you like made available to you in your current role to keep it challenging/interesting

· Would opportunities to provide cover for absences/short vacancies help as enabling upskilling and development opportunities?

· What experience do you have of promotion in your current role/previous roles and how could this have been improved for you?

· What are the barriers you see for exploring opportunities that arise in departments outside your own? Is there any we might be able to do to break these down?

· Have you ever been a member of a professional organisation and if so, what benefits or otherwise do you think this offered?

Recognition

· Do you sit on a University/Department Committee and if so, what is your role? Are there any Committees you/colleagues are not on which you believe technical input would be highly beneficial on?

· Is there anything that prevents you putting yourself forward for a Committee role when opportunities arise?

· What types of interactions do you have with academic and administrative staff in your department?

· Do you feel valued as a Technician? If not, why is that the case and what would help you feel more valued?

· What sort of things do you think could be put in place to showcase what you do in your role?

· Do you think that Technicians across the University are treated the same or are their differences across departments or across categories of Technicians, ie. Research Technicians, Core Technicians, Specialist Technicians

· Apart from monetary reward, what other things could the University do to recognise your input?

The bullet points above are to promote discussion but if you have any other ideas or suggestions on either of these topics please raise these at the meeting or alternatively email them in to Technicians@warwick.ac.uk

Kind Regards,

The Technicians Commitment Steering Group.
