Service description

The Residential Network service provides you with:

  1. A single ethernet outlet in your bedroom through which you may connect a computer to the Internet using an RJ 45 ethernet cable.
  2. A connection to the Internet, comparable to a domestic broadband service. The speed provided is 50/50 Mbps (Down/Up) throughout the acedemic year. The service is shared with other customers at a contention ratio of 50:1 via the traffic shaping service, to optimize the service offered.
  3. A single IP address issued by the ResNet DHCP servers.
  4. The ability to connect computers running Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, Mac OS X or above, or Linux
  5. Access to free anti-virus software for Windows & Apple Mac computers.
  6. A Student Computing Helpdesk which can be contacted by telephoning 57000 from an internal extension or 024 765 75000 from your mobile or an external line, or by emailing studentcomputing@warwick.ac.uk.
  7. For £30 you can get unlimited system support for your privately owned computer for the entire academic year. For more information http://go.warwick.ac.uk/systemsupport
  8. For students, a single ResNet connection is provided in their room within Halls of Residence. The location of this port is not movable.
  9. For staff living on campus, a single ResNet connection is provided in their accommodation. Although there may be more than one physical outlet in their accommodation, only one will be a live connection to ResNet. The member of staff can choose which one of any available physical ports is the active port. All requests must be logged with the ITS helpdesk.
  10. For wardens living on campus, a single ResNet connection is provided in their accommodation. The Residential Network Service does not provide you with:

  1. The ability to connect a computer running an old version of Windows (95, 98, 2000, ME, XP or Vista)
  2. The ability to be able to connect more than one computer, or registered network device at a time through any given outlet. (Extending the network by using hubs, switches or wireless access devices is strictly prohibited).
  3. A direct connection to the main campus network.
  4. Networked printing in the halls of residence.
  5. The RJ 45 ethernet cable between your computer & the outlet.
  6. Completely unrestricted access to the Internet. Access will be subject to the prevailing firewall & security policies.

Acceptable Use Policy of the ResNet Service:

In order for the ResNet service to function effectively it is essential that all students using ResNet abide by the terms & conditions as laid out in IMP 09: Acceptable Use PolicyLink opens in a new window .

Note: As of May 2026 the previously stated Resnet AUP has been superseded by University Policy IMP 09.

Communication

IDG will use the following types of communication to ensure that customers are aware of information relevant to the ResNet Service:

  1. Information will be posted on the IDG news website https://warwick.ac.uk/services/idg/news/
  2. Posters within Residences (i.e. Kitchens & doors).
  3. Distribution of adhoc literature direct to Residences at periodic times during the year.
  4. Broadcast messages on Radio Warwick (RaW) in the event a major incident
  5. Via the Student Union website
  6. Email where appropriate.
