Introduction to EchoVideo
EchoVideo is the University's lecture capture and primary video management platform. It enables you to record teaching sessions, upload videos, share content with students, and provide accessible learning resources through captions and transcripts.
EchoVideo can capture content in three main ways:
- Lecture Capture: Automatically records teaching sessions in lecture capture-enabled rooms.
- Universal Capture (Personal): Allows instructors to record lectures, presentations, demonstrations, and other content from their own computer.
- Browser capture: Allows instructors (and students) to capture content directly from a compatible web browser without the need to install software.
Recordings can be made available to students through your Moodle course and viewed on a wide range of devices.
Lecture capture equipment and use in centrally timetabled rooms is supported by the Audio Visual Team. Scheduling of lecture recordings, use of Universal Capture (Personal) and the EchoVideo platform in general is supported by the central Digital Learning team.

EchoVideo terminology
When using EchoVideo, it helps to understand some common terminology. Key terms are listed in the glossary below (expand to view) but are also linked to throughout these guides where clicking on them will show their definition in a pop-up window.
Accessing & navigating EchoVideo
There are two way to access EchoVideo: via Moodle and directly. We recommend accessing it through Moodle for the most seamless experience and to ensure that the correct permissions are granted according to your Moodle course role.
Access via Moodle
Most staff and students access EchoVideo via Moodle. It is available in most module spaces via the Lecture Capture block in the right-hand side block drawer. Clicking the block for the first time will create a user account in EchoVideo and assign you an appropriate role.
Clicking the block takes you directly to the section in EchoVideo associated with that module occurrence (or ad hoc course).
If you do not yet have access to any Moodle courses that have a Lecture Capture block you can click the button below to enrol on the Lecture Capture / Universal Capture - Echo360 Accounts course and follow the instructions.
Direct login
In order to use direct login, you must have accessed EchoVideo via Moodle at least once to generate your user account.
You can also log in directly to EchoVideoLink opens in a new window but you must create a separate password. This is essential if you want to use Universal Capture and/or the EchoVideo mobile app. This password can be the same as your Warwick IT password but they will not be linked in any way.
If you log in to EchoVideo directly, you will be taken to your Library. This contains any media that you have uploaded or lecture captures that you were listed as the presenter for.
Navigating EchoVideo
Once logged into Echo you will either be taken directly to the module's class list or to your Library. The image below is best viewed in full screen mode. Click the Fullscreen button in the top right-hand corner to expand it. Click the hotspots for more information on each area.
Roles & permissions
The role you have in EchoVideo can vary between sections. When you access EchoVideo via Moodle, you are assigned a role for that particular module/section. The role you are assigned depends on the role you have in that Moodle course. As you would expect, the roles in Moodle with editing access map to a role in EchoVideo with more permissions than non-editing roles.
Note that while all editing roles in Moodle grant instructor access in EchoVideo, the owner of a video has additional permissions. The owner will be the person who created and/or uploaded the video, or the one who was named as instructor (presenter) for scheduled lecture capture.
The table below indicates how the Moodle roles map to EchoVideo roles and the permissions these may grant to a section. The list of permissions is not exhaustive but highlights the main functional differences between roles in the context of their use at Warwick.

If you are prompted to log in when clicking on the Lecture Capture block from a Moodle course, it is due to a role conflict within EchoVideo. Contact lecturecapture@warwick.ac.uk for advice.
Capture options
Lecture Capture allows you to record face-to-face teaching sessions delivered in lecture capture-enabled teaching spaces without having to set up any equipment yourself or have any technicians present. There are over 280 enabled rooms across campus.
Once a recording has been scheduled, it will be:
- captured automatically at the scheduled time.
- processed and stored in EchoVideo.
- available for editing by the recording owner.
- published to students through Moodle, either automatically or when manually released by the video owner.
Students value having access to recorded lectures for revision and review. Research shows that students use recordings as a supplement rather than as a substitute for attending lectures. Recordings are of course also useful in circumstances where students are unable to attend in person.
While recordings may be provided as a reasonable adjustment for students with disabilities, Lecture Capture also helps make your teaching more accessible and inclusive for all students.
Student engagement and attendance
There are often concerns that recording lectures may negatively affect attendance or engagement. However, evidence does not demonstrate a consistent causal relationship between the availability of recordings and reduced attendance.
Students continue to attend lectures for a variety of reasons, including opportunities for peer learning, the structure and routine provided by scheduled teaching sessions, and the value of real-time interaction with lecturers and fellow students. Rather than replacing attendance, lecture recordings can enhance learning by allowing students to review and consolidate their understanding after the session.
Live lecture capture in teaching rooms at Warwick is currently covered by an opt-in consent policy. Student recordings (and use of lecture captures), whether created in teaching rooms, or online, are covered by a recording and re-use policy. What you can record with Lecture Capture
There are various recording options available according to what you want to capture. The options available vary according to the equipment available in the chosen room or space.

Live streaming in Lecture Capture-enabled spaces
When scheduling a recording, there is an option to live stream where audiences outside of the room can view the session as it is being recorded. EchoVideo live streaming can take place in any of the University’s lecture capture-enabled spaces.
Where the live stream does not include any interactivity with the remote audience, there is no difference between students watching a recording or watching the live stream.
