Warwick Arts Centre

Director: A. Rivett, CertEd

Built with funds raised almost entirely from private sources, Warwick Arts Centre is one of the largest combined performing and visual arts centres in the UK and provides an outstanding cultural facility for students and staff of the University and for the local community. Its total annual audience is in excess of 250,000.

The first phase of Warwick Arts Centre opened in October 1974 and comprised a 573-seat Theatre, a Studio Theatre seating up to 200, Conference Room, Music Centre, Bookshop, licensed bars and a cafe. In January 1981 the 1500-seat Arts Centre Hall was opened; in 1986 it was renamed the Butterworth Hall in honour of the University’s first Vice-Chancellor. The third phase of the Arts Centre was completed in January 1986 and comprises a Film Theatre seating 225, a large Bookshop, and an Art Gallery which was formally opened in May 1986 by Sir William Rees-Mogg, Chairman of the Arts Council, and named the Mead Gallery in memory of Phil Mead who had for many years served as University Treasurer.

The Arts Centre presents a wide selection of the performing and visual arts for a large part of the year. The Butterworth Hall offers a broad spectrum of events including classical, jazz, world music and rock concerts, as well as performances by leading comedians. It is home to the Concert Series which features major orchestras and conductors each year. The renowned string quartet, the Coull Quartet, is in residence at the University and gives a number of concerts every year, as well as teaching in the Music Centre. Various student groups also give concerts in the Hall during the year.

The Theatre stages a variety of dance, drama and opera productions and frequently presents the work of major national touring companies. From time to time Warwick Arts Centre co-produces work in partnership with leading companies. The Studio is used for more experimental drama, dance, music and comedy productions. The student Drama Society, WUDS and other University groups use the Studio and the Theatre regularly. Warwick Arts Centre has its own scenery construction workshop and paint frame.

The Mead Gallery is a venue for a range of national touring exhibitions, some of which it curates itself. It also curates exhibitions from the University’s own collection. A film programme, including seasons of foreign films and films receiving their first showing in the area, operates seven days a week throughout the year. The Conference Room, seating 250, is used during the day for academic purposes, whilst in the evening it is available for meetings, discussions or small public performances and hosts the Writers at Warwick programme of distinguished novelists, poets, biographers and critics.

The comfortable and contemporary Arts Centre bars, coffee bar and restaurant provide excellent facilities for socialising and refreshment during the day and evening.

The Arts Centre runs a comprehensive programme of education activities to support and develop its programme of work. Warwick Arts Centre is a resource provided by The University of Warwick with support from Arts Council West Midlands, Coventry County Council, Warwickshire County Council and Screen West Midlands.

Department of Physical Education and Sport

Director of Physical Education and Sport: T. Monnington, BA, MA Birm, TCert

The indoor and outdoor sports and physical recreation facilities on the University campus are very substantial, catering for a broad range of interests. Outdoors, the facilities include extensive playing fields for football, rugby, hockey, cricket, American football and lacrosse, primarily located on the Cryfield area of campus adjacent to our outstanding sports pavilion. In addition there are two floodlit, all-weather, sand-filled pitches; ideal for hockey and an artificial grass pitch, designed specifically to provide training and match facilities for contact sports, especially football and rugby. The artificial pitches are located on the Westwood Campus complemented by a recently refurbished Mondo, eight-lane 400-metre athletics track and nine porous tarmacadam tennis courts (six of which are also available for netball). Current redevelopment of our Westwood tennis courts include construction of a 4 court indoor tennis centre and provision of floodlighting on the remaining four outdoor courts for tennis and netball. Three synthetic grass tennis courts complete the extensive range of outdoor sports facilities, located on Central Campus.

Indoors the University Sports Centre on Central Campus incorporates two four-court sports halls (one of which provides four indoor cricket bays), a 25-metre, six-lane swimming pool, six squash courts and a multi-purpose gymnasium for such activities as martial arts, table tennis and fitness training. The Centre has also had an indoor Climbing Room for several years. In the summer of 2004 this room was significantly redesigned and improved. Construction of an independent bouldering room has made Warwick a major indoor climbing centre of regional significance. In 2003, a new fitness gym was also opened with 80 exercise stations, complemented by a refurbished weights room. In addition, an air-conditioned studio was also opened. On the Westwood campus there is a third sports hall, which is used for a number of indoor sports. The University now has sports facilities that are the envy of most UK institutions of higher education and was awarded a five star rating by the Sunday Times in its Good University Guide in 2005/06. It was further ranked in the top 4 institutions in the country for its quality sports facilities, support services and intra-mural activities on campus in the Times ‘Good University Guide 2007’.

To support sports participation a new sports administration was created in 2004/05, Warwick Sport. The new organisation has responsibility for organising all sport on campus, with significantly increased resources, to support an expanded programme of activities to further enhance the quality of the sporting experience at Warwick. Membership of Warwick Sport rose during the 2006/7 academic year to nearly 10,000 staff and students.

The Sports facilities on the Central Campus open as follows:

General Medical Services

The Health Centre is situated on the main campus and is open from 9am – 6pm, Monday to Friday during term time and 9am– 5pm during vacations. Two GP group practices work from here, both having male and female doctors. Both practices run an appointment system.

In conjunction with the nursing staff, general medical services are provided for patients registered with these GP practices including travel and contraceptive /sexual health clinics. Nurse practitioners hold daily minor illness sessions for self-limiting medical conditions. Details of arrangements for home visits and emergency medical consultations outside office hours are provided on registration. There is a physiotherapy service based in the Health Centre to which the GPs can refer patients. Normally the doctors are only on site when holding surgeries. There are Nurse Practitioners or Practice Nurses available, usually by appointment, between 9am – 6pm (5pm in vacation).

All students living on campus should register at the Health Centre as soon as possible. Students living off campus in Coventry may also be able to register. In an emergency the staff at the Health Centre will give whatever assistance is appropriate to any student, staff or visitor on site who is ill whether or not they are registered with either practice. However anyone registered with another GP in the vicinity will only be seen by a doctor in a medical emergency. UK students should bring their NHS number or NHS card and details of their previous GP with them in order to register. Overseas female students who hold the results of a cervical smear or PAP test should give this information to the Health Centre.

Careers Centre

Director: H. R. Wooldridge Smith, BA Brad, MA Leeds

The Centre aims to enhance the employablity of Warwick students and recent graduates and develop their capacity to move self-sufficiently into, and within the labour market to fulfil their potential through sustainable employment. To this end we offer careers guidance, a range of activities that develop the career management skills of our students, a comprehensive range of employer presentations and recruitment fairs and on and off-line careers resources. We run a Career Management Certificate which is credit-bearing. Full details of our programme of workshops, fairs and presentations are listed on our website, http://go.warwick.ac.uk/careers. Our website offers a comprehensive range of needs-based advice and information links to allow our users to explore their options and research their career strategies in this most accessible medium.

We encourage students to start thinking about their future careers and developing the skills that recruiters seek as early as the first year of their undergraduate degree. Approximately 60% of graduate opportunities are filled on the basis of genuine career interest, evidence of skills and potential to develop, rather than knowledge or relevance of degree subject. For most students it takes considerable time and effort to research these opportunities and to formulate their decisions from this range of choice. We recommend that students start to research their options, gain experience and formulate their plans from their first year.

Vacations offer students a significant opportunity to gain an insight into graduate work through work experience. We encourage students to make full use of the support that we give them in identifying and obtaining such opportunities, reflecting on their experiences and using these to exemplify their suitability for graduate employment. The Centre has a dedicated Work Experience team which offers bursary funding for students wishing to undertake unpaid opportunities.

We offer short guidance appointments bookable up to a week in advance between 10.00am and 5.00pm most weekdays in term time and most days in the vacations. Where desirable a longer guidance consultation will be made by a Careers Consultant following this initial discussion.

We are located in the Student Development and Support Centre on the ground floor of University House. Our information resource, the Careers Hub is located within the ground floor of the Learning Grid.

Opening hours:

For advice and help:

Monday 10.30am - 5.00pm
Tuesday - Thursday 9.00am - 5.00pm
Friday 9.00am - 4.00pm

For information and resources:
The Careers Hub, with all our information and resources, is open 24/7. The Help Desk is typically manned from 9.00am to 5.00pm or into the early evening during term.

In January 2004 the Service achieved accreditation under the ‘ Matrix’ Quality Standards for its advice and guidance and was one of two UK universities awarded a Matrix Excellence Award in November 2004. In May 2005 we were voted 4th best University Careers Service by the Association of Graduate Recruiters. The Service strives to achieve excellence on behalf of the students it serves.

Founded and built in 1974 by the Christian and Jewish communities, the Chaplaincy Centre is well situated at the heart of the University campus. The Chaplaincy is a vibrant space open to all members of the University community. You can come here for meetings, to relax or study together, enjoy light refreshments, or spend time in public worship or quiet thought. It’s a popular gathering place that welcomes students of any or no faith.

The Chaplaincy is home to the Anglican, Roman Catholic, Free Church, Muslim and Jewish chaplains, who are always glad to meet students socially and pastorally. As a valued part of the University’s Welfare network, the chaplains offer everyone a sympathetic ear in total confidence.

There are regular services for all denominations as well as many social events. Christian groups meet several times a week for prayer, Bible study and discussion. On Friday nights Jewish students meet for the Shabbat meal, a kosher kitchen is available in the building. A beautifully appointed Islamic Prayer Hall was inaugurated last March, providing the diverse Muslim community on campus with a superb new facility. This is located next to the existing Chaplaincy building.

The new Chaplaincy website can be found at the following web address: http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/services/chaplaincy/
