Reg. 7 Award and Tenure of Scholarships
7.1 University of Warwick Music Scholarships
(1) A number of scholarships called the University of Warwick Music Scholarships, to be offered to full-time students (undergraduate and postgraduate) entering the University, shall be offered for competition each year. A number of choral and instrumental awards shall be offered each year, and from time to time a keyboard scholarship shall be offered in addition. (Details of the Organ Scholarships and for Electro-Acoustic Composition are available separately.)
(2) Any person who has applied for admission to the University shall be eligible for candidature. Holders of the Scholarships shall be required to pursue, as full-time registered students, a scheme of study for a qualification of the University and must fulfil the entrance requirements of the relevant academic department or school of the University.
(3) The Music Scholarships shall be awarded for ability in musical performance to be judged on the basis of trials to be held at the University, annually on the first Monday in March. The trials shall be adjudicated by a panel consisting of the University’s Director of Music (Chair), a member of the University’s Quartet-in-Residence, a member of the Institute of Education responsible for teaching in music to be nominated by the Head of that Department, and a senior member of the academic staff to be appointed by the Steering Committee of the Senate.
(4) The choral awards shall be offered for all voices (soprano, alto (male or female), tenor, baritone, bass). In the trial candidates will be given ear tests and some sight reading. They will also be required to prepare a solo. Accompaniment will be provided.
(5) The instrumental awards shall be offered for all orchestral instruments, including saxophone, harp and percussion. Grade VII or VIII of the Associated Board shall be regarded as the normal minimum level of attainment by candidates. In the trial candidates will be required to perform a piece or pieces of their own choice, lasting not more than ten minutes. Accompaniment will be provided. They will also be examined in sight reading.
(6) In the trial, candidates for the keyboard scholarship will be required to perform a piece or pieces of their own choice, lasting up to ten minutes. They will also be examined in sight reading and will be asked to accompany a short part of a choral rehearsal conducted by the Director of Music. Some of the music to be rehearsed will be supplied to candidates in advance.
(7) Those students holding choral awards shall be required to sing in both the University Chamber Choir and the University Chorus, to take advantage of the University’s scheme of subsidised singing lessons, and generally to participate in the University’s choral activities. Those students holding orchestral awards shall be required to play in both the University Symphony Orchestra and the University Chamber Orchestra and/or the University Symphonic Wind Ensemble and/or the University Brass Band, as appropriate, to take advantage of the University’s scheme of subsidised instrumental lessons, and generally to participate in the University’s instrumental activities. Those holding the keyboard scholarship shall be required to accompany the Chamber Choir and Opera rehearsals and to deputise from time to time for the Chorus’ pianist. Subsidised piano tuition shall be given to the keyboard scholar, who shall also be given opportunities from time to time to conduct and coach.
(8) The value of the scholarships shall be £400 p.a. They shall be awarded initially for one year, and shall be reviewed annually by the Director of Music for the duration of the period of full-time study in the University of the student. Students whose course requires them to be absent from the University for a whole year, or who withdraw temporarily from the University for a whole year or more, shall not continue to hold their Scholarship during that period, but will be eligible for re-election to a Scholarship upon their return to full-time study in the University.
(9) Applications for the University of Warwick Music Scholarships should be made on application forms obtainable from the Music Secretary normally not later than 10th February in the proposed year of entry to the University. Applications made after this date may be considered at the discretion of the University’s Director of Music. There shall be no charge for competing, and no expenses shall be offered by the University to competing candidates, except that in cases of proved need, the Director of Music may at his/her discretion use Music Centre funds to contribute to expenses.
(10) Every candidate to whom a Scholarship is offered must accept or decline the offer within a period of two weeks from receipt of the offer.
7.2 The Warwick Choral Trust Organ Scholarship Tenable at the University of Warwick
(1) A University of Warwick Organ Scholarship, to be offered to a full-time student (undergraduate or postgraduate) entering the University, shall be offered for competition from time to time.
(2) Any person who has applied for admission to the University shall be eligible for candidature. The Scholarship can be held only by persons pursuing, as full-time registered students, a scheme of study for a qualification of the University, having fulfilled the entrance requirements of the relevant academic department or school of the University.
(3) The Organ Scholarship shall be awarded for ability in musical performance to be judged on the basis of a trial to be held at St. Mary’s Church, Warwick. The trial shall be adjudicated by a panel consisting of the University's Director of Music, the Director of Music of St. Mary’s Church, Warwick, a member of the Institute of Education responsible for teaching in music, to be nominated by the Head of that department, and a senior member of the academic staff to be appointed by the Steering Committee of the Senate.
(4) In the trial, candidates will be required to perform a piece or pieces of their own choice, lasting up to fifteen minutes. They will also be examined in sight reading and will be asked to accompany a short part of a choral rehearsal conducted by the Director of Music of St. Mary’s Church, Warwick. Some of the music to be rehearsed will be supplied to candidates in advance.
(5) The Organ Scholar will be required to play for Sunday services and mid-week evensong as and when required during University terms. He/she will also be required to attend, and occasionally take, choir practices as and when required during University terms. The Scholar may be required to assist with Christmas and Easter services.
(6) The Organ Scholar shall receive three organ lessons per term, free of charge, from the Director of Music of St. Mary’s Church, Warwick and shall be permitted to practise on the Nicholson double organ of St. Mary’s Church, Warwick.
(7) The value of the Scholarship shall be £400 p.a. In addition travel expenses between the University and St. Mary’s Church, Warwick will be met by the University and the Choral Trust up to a maximum of £100 p.a. each. The Scholarship shall be awarded initially for one year, and shall be reviewed annually by the Director of Music of the University and the Director of Music of St. Mary’s Church, Warwick for the duration of the period of full-time study in the University. Students whose course requires them to be absent from the University for a whole year, or who withdraw temporarily from the University for a whole year or more, shall not continue to hold their scholarship during that period, but will be eligible for re-election to a Scholarship upon their return to full-time study in the University.

7.3 The All Saints’ Church, Leamington Spa Organ Scholarship, Tenable at the University of Warwick
(1) A University of Warwick Organ Scholarship, to be offered to a full-time student (undergraduate or postgraduate) entering the University, shall be offered for competition from time to time.
(2) Any person who has applied for admission to the University shall be eligible for candidature. The Scholarship can be held only by persons pursuing, as full-time registered students, a scheme of study for a qualification of the University, having fulfilled the entrance requirements of the relevant academic department or school of the University.
(3) The Organ Scholarship shall be awarded for ability in musical performance to be judged on the basis of a trial to be held at All Saints’ Church, Leamington Spa. The trial shall be adjudicated by a panel consisting of the University’s Director of Music, the Director of Music of All Saints’ Church, Leamington Spa, a member of the Institute of Educationresponsible for teaching in music, to be nominated by the Head of that department, and a senior member of the academic staff to be appointed by the Steering Committee of the Senate.
(4) In the trial, candidates will be required to perform a piece or pieces of their own choice, lasting up to fifteen minutes. They will also be examined in sight reading and will be asked to accompany a short part of a choral rehearsal conducted by the Director of Music of All Saints’ Church, Leamington Spa. Some of the music to be rehearsed will be supplied to candidates in advance.
(5) The Organ Scholar will act as deputy organist as and when required during University terms. He/she will also be required to attend, sing in and occasionally take, choir practices. The Scholar may be required to assist with Christmas and Easter services.
(6) The Organ Scholar shall receive four hours organ tuition per term from the Director of Music of All Saints’ Church, Leamington Spa, who will be paid at the University’s current music teaching rate. The Scholar will be eligible for financial help towards these lessons from the subsidised tuition scheme run by the University Music Centre. The Organ Scholar shall be permitted to practise on the organ of All Saints’ Church, Leamington Spa, at such times as are convenient with the Director of Music of the church.
(7) The value of the Scholarship shall be £400 p.a. In addition, reasonable travel expenses between the University and All Saints’ Church, Leamington Spa will be met by All Saints’ Church. The Scholarship shall be awarded initially for one year, and shall be reviewed annually by the Director of Music of the University and the Director of Music of All Saints’ Church, Leamington Spa for the duration of the period of full-time study in the University. Students whose course requires them to be absent from the University for a whole year, or who withdraw temporarily from the University for a whole year or more, shall not continue to hold their scholarship during that period, but will be eligible for re-election to a Scholarship upon their return to full-time study in the University.
