Ord. 7 Constitution of the Boards of the Faculties
Amendments (additions in italics, deletions struck through) are subject to second approval by the Council at the meeting scheduled for 11th February 2015.
Ordinance on the Constitution of the Boards of the Faculties
(1) Under the terms of Statute 17(1) there shall be a Faculty of Arts, a Faculty of Medicine, a Faculty of Science, and a Faculty of Social Sciences.
(2) Under the terms of Statute 17(2) each Faculty shall have a Board, namely a Board of the Faculty of Arts, a Board of the Faculty of Medicine, a Board of the Faculty of Science, and a Board of the Faculty of Social Sciences.
(3) The membership of the Boards of the Faculties shall be as follows:
Board of the Faculty of Arts
(a) The Vice-Chancellor.
(b) The Head and three other members of academic staff elected by and from each of the Departments of English and Comparative Literary Studies, History and the School of Modern Languages and Cultures.
(c) The Head and one other member of academic staff elected by and from each of the Departments of Classics and Ancient History and History of Art.
(d) The Chair, ex officio, and five other members of academic staff elected by and from the Undergraduate Studies Committee of the Board of the Faculty of Arts and the Chair and three other members of academic staff elected by and from the Graduate Studies Committee of the Board of the Faculty of Arts.
(e) The Head, ex officio, of the Department of Film and Television Studies and one member of academic staff appointed specifically and only to teach in Film and Television Studies subjects, elected by the members of the Department of Film and Television Studies.
(f) The Head, ex officio, of the School of Theatre, Performance and Cultural Policy Studies and one member of academic staff appointed specifically and only to teach in Theatre, Performance and Cultural Policy Studies subjects, elected by the members of the School of Theatre, Performance and Cultural Policy Studies.
(g) One member of staff elected by and from the Institute of Education and one member of staff elected by and from the Centre for Education Studies.
(h) One member of academic staff elected by and from the Department of Philosophy.
(i) Three members of academic staff, one to be elected by and from the Board of the Faculty of Medicine, one by and from the Board of the Faculty of Science, and one by and from the Board of the Faculty of Social Sciences.
(j) The Head, ex officio, of the School of Comparative American Studies.
(k) The Director of the Centre for Caribbean Studies or his/her nominee.
(l) Two student members, one of whom shall be the postgraduate student representative on the Graduate Studies Committee of the Board of the Faculty of Arts, who shall be registered students of the University elected in accordance with the Regulations Governing the Procedure for the Election of Student Members and Observers on the Boards of the Faculties and Sub-Faculties. The student members shall not participate in nor receive papers for any business affecting the appointment, promotion and personal affairs of individual members of staff of the University or affecting the admission, academic assessment or personal affairs of individual students.
(m) Up to three co-opted members, being members of academic staff, subject to the approval of the Senate.
Board of the Faculty of Medicine
(a) The Vice-Chancellor.
(b) The Dean of the Warwick Medical School ex officio (Chair).
(c) The Pro Dean (Education) ex officio.
(d) The Pro Dean (Research) ex officio.
(e) The Heads of Division for Biomedical Cell Biology, Health Sciences, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Metabolic and Vascular Health plus Reproductive Health.
(f) The Head of Educational Development and Research
(g) Four senior academic staff from the Educational Development Team.
(h) Five members of academic staff elected by and from the Warwick Medical School.
(i) The Head of the School of Life Sciences plus two members of academic staff elected by and from the School.
(j) Up to three co-opted members, one of whom shall be a member of staff of the Warwick Manufacturing Group, one of whom shall be a member of staff of the Warwick Business School and one of whom shall be a member of staff of the Department of Psychology, subject to the approval of the Senate.
(k) Up to five co-opted members external to the University, nominated by the Faculty Board, and subject to the approval of the Senate.
(l) Three members of academic staff, one to be elected by and from the Board of the Faculty of Arts, one by and from the Board of the Faculty of Science and one by and from the Board of the Faculty of Social Sciences.
(m) One student member, who will be a registered student on the MB ChB at the University of Warwick, elected in accordance with the Regulations Governing the Procedure for the Election of Student Members and Observers on the Boards of the Faculties and Sub-Faculties.
The student member shall not participate in nor receive papers for any business affecting the appointment, promotion and personal affairs of individual members of staff of the University or affecting the admission, academic assessment or personal affairs of individual students.
(n) The Departments of the Faculty shall be:
The Warwick Medical School
Board of the Faculty of Science
(a) The Vice-Chancellor.
(b) The Head and one other member of academic staff elected by and from each of the Departments of Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics; the Schools of Engineering and Life Sciences; and the Warwick Manufacturing Group.
(c) The Head and one other member of academic staff elected by and from each of the Departments of Psychology and Statistics.
(d) The Chair of the Faculty of Science Undergraduate Studies Committee, ex officio, and two other members of academic staff elected by and from the Faculty of Science Undergraduate Studies Committee.
(e) The Chair of the Faculty of Science Graduate Studies Committee, ex officio, and one other member of academic staff elected by and from the Graduate Studies Committee.
(f) The Chair of the Faculty of Science Research and Innovation Committee, ex officio.
(g) One member of staff elected by and from the Centre for Professional Education and one member of staff elected by and from the Centre for Education studies.
(h) Three members of academic staff, one to be elected by and from the Board of the Faculty of Medicine, one by and from the Board of the Faculty of Arts, and one by and from the Board of the Faculty of Social Sciences.
(i) Up to three co-opted members, being members of academic staff, subject to the approval of the Senate.
(j) Three student members, two of whom shall be registered undergraduate students and one who shall be a registered postgraduate student of the University, elected in accordance with the Regulations Governing the Procedure for the Election of Student Members and Observers on the Boards of the Faculties and Sub-Faculties. The student members will not participate in nor receive papers for any business affecting the appointment, promotion and personal affairs of individual members of staff of the University or affecting the admission, academic assessment or personal affairs of individual students.
(k) The Departments within the Faculty of Science shall be the Departments of Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology, Statistics, the School of Life Sciences, the School of Engineering and the Warwick Manufacturing Group
Board of the Faculty of Social Sciences
(a) The Vice-Chancellor.
(b) The Head of Department and one other member of academic staff elected by and from each Department within the Faculty with up to ten members as at the date of the election.
(c) The Head of Department and two other members of academic staff elected by and from each Department within the Faculty with between eleven and twenty members as at the date of the election.
(d) The Head of Department and three other members of academic staff elected by and from each Department within the Faculty with twenty-one or more members as at the date of the election.
(e) The Director of the Institute for Employment Research, ex officio, or another member of the academic staff of the Institute nominated by the Director.
(f) One member of academic staff of the Department of History, to be nominated by the Head of the Department of History, normally for a period of one year.
(g) One member of academic staff of the Department of Psychology, to be nominated by the Head of the Department of Psychology, normally for a period of one year.
(h) The Director of the Centre for Educational Development Appraisal and Research or another member of the academic staff of the Centre nominated by the Director.
(i) The Director of the Centre for Education and Industry or another member of the academic staff of the Centre nominated by the Director.
(j) The Director of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies or another member of the academic staff of the Centre nominated by the Director.
(k) The Director of the Centre for Applied Linguistics or another member of the academic staff of the Centre nominated by the Director and one other member of staff from within the Centre nominated by the Director.
(l) The Chairs of the Graduate Studies Committee and Undergraduate Studies Committee of the Faculty of Social Sciences ex officio.
(m) Three members of academic staff, one to be elected by and from the Board of the Faculty of Medicine, one by and from the Board of the Faculty of Arts, and one by and from the Board of the Faculty of Science.
(n) Two student members, one of whom shall be a registered undergraduate student and one a registered postgraduate student of the University elected in accordance with the Regulations Governing the Procedure for the Election of Student Members and Observers on the Boards of the Faculties and Sub-Faculties. The student members shall not participate in nor receive papers for any business affecting the appointment, promotion and personal affairs of individual members of the staff of the University or affecting the admission, academic assessment or personal affairs of individual students.
(o) Up to five co-opted members, being members of academic staff, subject to the approval of the Senate, normally to include the Chair of the Faculty IT Committee, the Director of the Centre for Lifelong Learning and the Director of the Centre for Professional Education.
(p) One co-opted member, external to the University, nominated by the Faculty Board and subject to the approval of the Senate.
(q) The Departments within the Faculty of Social Sciences shall be the Centre for Professional Education Studies, the Departments of Economics, Philosophy, Politics and International Studies, Sociology, the School of Law and the Warwick Business School.
(4) The Chair of the Boards of the Faculties of Arts, Science, and Social Sciences and Medicine shall be a member appoint a Chair from among members of the Board. The Chair shall hold office for no more than two consecutive terms of three years; appointment being subject to annual reaffirmation by the Board. He/she shall hold office for one year and shall be eligible for reappointment.
(5) The Dean of the Warwick Medical School shall be the Chair of the Board of the Faculty of Medicine.
