Terms of Reference
The Social Inclusion Committee shall advise and may make recommendations to the Senate and the Council on matters relating to the Social Inclusion strategy and the promotion and monitoring of equality, diversity and inclusion issues throughout the University.
Where appropriate, the Committee shall refer matters direct to, and seek responses from, other committees or any appropriate body.
a) To oversee and provide direction for the implementation of the University’s Social Inclusion Strategy;
b) To devise, co-ordinate and monitor steps taken by the University to comply with the Equality Act 2010, with particular regard to the protected characteristics: age, disability, race, sex, sexual orientation, religion or belief, gender reassignment, pregnancy and maternity and marriage or civil partnership.
c) To develop and review policies relevant to social inclusion (including specifically equality and diversity), to monitor the implementation of these policies, ensuring that they comply with the law and are effectively disseminated to the University community.
d) To oversee and provide direction for the implementation of the University’s Social Inclusion Strategy working with, and providing guidance to, relevant taskforces and subgroups.
e) To advise the Council, the Senate and other University bodies on policy matters and practice relating to social inclusion, equality and diversity.
f) To consult widely with all relevant groups within the University in pursuance of its terms of reference.
g) To monitor the composition of the University’s workforce and student body (including practice on the admission of students and the recruitment of staff) and to direct actions on identified trends where necessary.
Reporting Structure
The Social Inclusion Committee reports to the Council and the Senate. It also liaises with the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Network.

Papers for consideration by the Social Inclusion Committee should be submitted to the Secretary two weeks in advance of the meeting at which they are to be considered.
