The Residential Network service provides you with:
- A single ethernet outlet in your bedroom through which you may connect a computer to the Internet using an RJ 45 ethernet cable.
- A connection to the Internet, comparable to a domestic broadband service. The speed provided is 20/20 Mbps (Down/Up) throughout the acedemic year. The service is shared with other customers at a contention ratio of 50:1 via the traffic shaping service, to optimize the service offered.
- A single IP address issued by the ResNet DHCP servers.
- The ability to connect computers running Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, Mac OS X or above, or Linux
- Access to free anti-virus software for Windows & Apple Mac computers.
- A Student Computing Helpdesk which can be contacted by telephoning 57000 from an internal extension or 024 765 75000 from your mobile or an external line, or by emailing email@example.com.
- For £30 you can get unlimited system support for your privately owned computer for the entire academic year. For more information http://go.warwick.ac.uk/systemsupport
- For students, a single ResNet connection is provided in their room within Halls of Residence. The location of this port is not movable.
- For staff living on campus, a single ResNet connection is provided in their accommodation. Although there may be more than one physical outlet in their accommodation, only one will be a live connection to ResNet. The member of staff can choose which one of any available physical ports is the active port. All requests must be logged with the ITS helpdesk.
- For wardens living on campus, a single ResNet connection is provided in their accommodation. Although there may be more than one physical outlet in their accommodation, only one will be a live connection to ResNet. The Residential Network Service does not provide you with:
- The ability to connect a computer running an old version of Windows (95, 98, 2000, ME, XP or Vista)
- The ability to be able to connect more than one computer, or registered network device at a time through any given outlet. (Extending the network by using hubs, switches or wireless access devices is strictly prohibited).
- A direct connection to the main campus network.
- Networked printing in the halls of residence.
- The RJ 45 ethernet cable between your computer & the outlet.
- Completely unrestricted access to the Internet. Access will be subject to the prevailing firewall & security policies.
Unacceptable Use of the ResNet Service:
In order for the ResNet service to function effectively it is essential that all students using ResNet abide by the terms & conditions as laid out in the Acceptable Use Policy.
In brief, in order for ResNet to function effectively, detrimental activity such as Peer to Peer file sharing is not allowed under any circumstances & engaging in such activity will result in the ResNet connection in your bedroom being blocked & in the event of a second occurrence will incur a reconnection fee.
Peer to Peer file sharing applications are a type of software that once loaded onto your machine can be used to download files, such as films & MP3’s, usually from multiple sources.
The running of this type of software results in a serious degradation of the service received by other students. As the ResNet Service is there to provide fair & equal access to the Internet for all residents., the running of Peer to Peer file sharing applications is not allowed under any circumstances.
You can still download films, music & other content etc. from legal & legitimate sources to your machine if you wish, as long as you do NOT use Peer to Peer file sharing applications to do it.
It is extremely important that you properly maintain your computer, Operating System and install appropriate up to date anti-virus & anti-spyware software. The university provides free anti-virus software to all students. This can be accessed via the ITS Website at http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/services/its/servicessupport/software/antivirus/
Please familiarise yourself with the ResNet Acceptable Use Policy together with this document, as both provide essential information regarding the appropriate / acceptable use of the ResNet Service.
If at any time you are in doubt as to whether an activity you wish to engage in is prohibited, please call the Student Computing Helpdesk (on 75000) who will be happy to provide guidance or clarification.
By following these rules, you will help to make the ResNet Service a reliable & efficient means of accessing the invaluable source of information that the Internet provides.The ResNet Acceptable Use Policy details full information. However, examples of unacceptable behaviour are detailed as follows:
- Installation or use of any peer to peer file-sharing applications on machines connected to the ResNet Service including, but not limited to, “bittorrent”, “uTorrent” or other equivalent software. (For the sake of clarity, IT Services publishes a list of example applications on the IT Services Web site, http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/services/its/servicessupport/networkservices/resnet/ & updates this list from time to time.)
- Use of the ResNet Service to gain, or attempt to gain, illegal or unauthorised access to data.
- 'Pass on' the ResNet Service to others, whether for commercial gain or free of charge.
- Connect machines running server operating systems or services (including for example DHCP, DNS, web servers, etc) to the Network Connection provided in your room.
- Cause disruption to the normal operation of the network (internal or external) or to any devices connected to it.
- Use the ResNet Service for any activities that bring the University into disrepute.
Consequences of Acceptable Use Policy Breach are as follows:
If you engage in any activity prohibited by the AUP, it will result in your removal from the network by the port in your bedroom being blocked / disconnected. The duration of the disconnection will depend on the type of prohibited activity engaged in, and is set out in ‘Disconnection Policy and Reconnection Charges’.
IT Services will use the following types of communication to ensure that customers are aware of information relevant to the ResNet Service:
- Information will be posted on the ITS Website http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/services/its/servicessupport/networkservices/resnet/
- Posters within Residences (i.e. Kitchens & doors).
- Distribution of adhoc literature direct to Residences at periodic times during the year.
- Broadcast messages on Radio Warwick (RaW) in the event a major incident
- Via the Student Union website
- Email where appropriate.
