Q: What type of work have you been doing?

A: Working with precision machine tools to fine tolerances requires maths skills such as trigonometry. I'm learning as much as I can across a wide range of mechanical workshop skills. Also, learning how to get on with different people and adapting to the whole working environment.

Q: Why did you become an apprentice?

A: I completed my AS levels but decided I wanted more hands-on learning and an apprenticeship appealed.

Q: Why did you choose an apprenticeship at Warwick?

A: The University is well established with a great reputation and lots of opportunities.

Q: What has been the highlight of your apprenticeship?

A: Meeting and working with so many different people.

Q: What are your plans for the future?

A: After the second year of my apprenticeship I then want to complete a HNC, hopefully gaining a permanent role at Warwick at the end!

Q: What would you say to someone who was considering joining an apprenticeship?

A: Personally it’s been a very good experience. I’ve received lots of training and I now know the career I want to pursue. I would suggest they choose something they enjoy and are enthusiastic about.

Interview with Peter Meesum, Technical Services Manager

Q: How have you found the experience of managing apprentices?

A: We have been fortunate to recruit keen, enthusiastic and capable individuals which has resulted in a positive experience for us and our apprentices.

Q: What are the main benefits of having an apprentice in your team?

A: University technicians perform a fairly unique role and we therefore need to train apprentices to have the skills we need. As a university we need succession planning and apprentices will help us to fulfil these objectives..
