I came to university having previously planned to not play table tennis again. However, I thought why not try and see what the university table tennis club is like –this decision changed my university life for the next 3 years.

I instantly clicked with a lot of the people within the club, all through a similar passion for the sport.

I started off by going to some online socials (during the second lockdown) and then I started going to some club sessions on campus when things started opening up later in my 1st year. I realised I still loved the sport and as a result just kept playing more.

I just about made the table tennis team in my second year, which sparked my competitive nature. The team and table tennis club really shaped my university experience from there onwards and I took time out from other things to prioritise training and improving as a player.

This drive to improve led to me also branching out to other clubs in London whilst off campus outside term time. I slowly started falling in love with the sport again as I learnt more through the experiences I was gaining by training with different people, watching matches, and competing in various competitions up and down the country (such as BUCS individuals).

Aside from the competitive side, I’ve been able to grow a very sociable and extroverted side of me that I never knew I had before university.

I’ve gone from a relatively introverted person to someone who now always wants to introduce himself to new faces around the club.

Going to clubs and circling was something I definitely didn’t think was for me, considering I don’t drink. However, I’ve now realised that doing those things sober can be just as fun, especially when I’m with my friends in and around the table tennis club.

The table tennis club has provided a route for me to expand as a person in so many different facets of life. I’d really recommend joining a sports club as it can really shape not only your years at university, but after you leave Warwick too.
