I have been part of the University of Warwick Volleyball Club (UWVC) since the first year of my undergraduate degree. During this time, I was lucky enough to be part of the women’s first team under the Warwick Sports Performance programme.

This involved having bi-weekly strength and conditioning sessions, in which development in my physical abilities such as vertical jump, squat PR or endurance capacities were monitored during the season to ensure progress. This not only guaranteed an improvement in my individual performance, but also helped with team cohesion and supported a good physical to mental health balance.

This, alongside having had greatly experienced head coaches, allowed us to qualify for the Volleyball nationwide Student Cup finals 3 years in a row and allowed me to compete at my highest level.

UWVC is also a very social club, we enjoyed a variety of weekly socials during term time that ranged from a Winter ball, Pop!, circling in the copper rooms and BBQs in the summer term.

I met many players from other teams and was able to enjoy many of the facilities and experiences that Warwick has to offer.

The socials allowed all members to interact with people from other year groups, study other disciplines, and come from different countries and regions. Furthermore, the club is also exceptionally inclusive and welcomes all playing abilities. This means that I was able to play alongside players who represent their countries internationally, and players that had only tried the sport recreationally before coming to Warwick.

Undoubtedly, one of the best feelings from my time at university, was meeting people from all over the world, who would then become my support bubble whilst playing the sport I love.

I am very proud of having seen all the girls I have played with graduate, get the placement they really wanted, travel abroad and a good number of them have now become my closest friends. One of the key skills I have taken from these 4 years is collaboration and cooperation through teamwork, and the importance of fair leadership as a team captain to achieve long-term goals.

I could not have imagined my experience studying BSc Biomedical Sciences at Warwick without being part of UWVC.

Having a network of fellow students that I could rely on allowed me to excel academically and helped nurture a good work-life balance.

My favourite moments at Warwick include breakfast with the team after morning trainings, winning the Varsity game against Coventry University, and attending the team dinners hosted at the Dirty Duck.

UWVC has shaped the person, and the athlete, I am today, and I will be forever grateful to all the people I have met along the way.
