I’m Catherine Henryanto, a second year chemist and I have been practicing and competing in taekwondo for over 12 years.
I compete at a range of levels from local tournaments, where I help support my local club, all the way up to world level, where I compete in different countries with my home taekwondo squad, representing England.
Sport has not only made me physically stronger, but I believe it has especially helped with my mental health and how I deal with any hardships I face in my day-to-day life.
Having the persistence and dedication to stick to a sport for 12 years has taught me how rewarding it is to dedicate yourself to something and to do it properly. I can also imagine that it has added some excitement to my life, where the thrill of competing and the idea of becoming a better version of myself, has made me look forward to the future, even when it might be a bad or stressful day.
Team Warwick has welcomed me to the university with open arms, providing me with workshops and services that I wouldn’t normally get with my home club. Services such as the Mental Wellbeing workshops, Nutritionist and the Strength and Conditioning programme have helped me learn more about myself as an athlete and figure out where my strengths and weaknesses lie, allowing me to develop and further reach my potential as a high-level taekwondo athlete.
My favourite thing about being involved in my sport at university, is meeting other athletes and learning from their experiences.
Such as how other athletes who don’t necessarily do my sport, deal with any cutbacks they face within their sport, or how they enhance their own performances with special training. Hearing these experiences allow me to experiment with new ways of training to help me grow.
