I started at Warwick in September 2020. Obviously with it being the Covid year I didn’t get involved a lot in societies and sports clubs, so I set myself a challenge to get involved in something new when my second year came around.
I have been dancing since the age of 6 - it has been something me and my sister did together for an hour every week, and it became my escape from everything else going on. Coming to Warwick, I didn’t realise how much I was going to miss it, so I settled on going to a few Latin & Ballroom sessions at Warwick.
From the beginning, I was welcomed into the club like someone who had been there for years.
Because I had previous dance experience, I was going to lessons where most people there had already been in the club for a while, so I was one of the few newbies. However, I instantly got talking to people across the club who have now become my best friends.
I was quickly convinced to try out a competition, even though I didn’t originally plan to compete. Our competitions are very long days but spending that time with a close group of friends, getting to know them and having a good time is some of the best time I have spent.
The team spirit is strong within Team Warwick, and even when things don’t go our way, we still have fun and come away stronger than ever.
Being a part of Latin & Ballroom has also meant I’ve been able to experience things I’ve dreamt of since I was younger. Every year, I would watch Strictly Come Dancing and try to imagine myself one day dancing in Blackpool. Latin v Ballroom attend Nationals each year and this takes place in the Winter Gardens in Blackpool – the home of Latin & Ballroom dancing. As I was walking in there with everyone for the first time, my mind was blown. Being in the same room as amazing dancers from across the country and having a great time with everyone was something I could never have imagined being able to do.
Being a part of a sports club at Warwick has enabled me to do something I love and develop myself and my personality.
Being able to have that separation from studying and social life and have something regular to look forward to each week is amazing. I do miss Latin & Ballroom when I go home for the holidays! I would highly recommend joining a sports club at Warwick – any club you join will be so welcoming, whether you’ve done the sport previously or are starting something new, it’s a great break from studying and I promise you’ll have the best time of your life.
