Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) - archive
Since 2015, anyone applying for a Student Visa (formerly known as Tier 4 ) from overseas which will be valid for longer than 6 months will be issued a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP).
This is also a requirement for students granted leave under the extended 11 month short term study visa route.
Applicants to the Student Visa route (formerly Tier 4) or students applying for an 11 month short term study visa, who make their visa application overseas, will receive a temporary travel visa (vignette) in their passport valid for travel and entry to the UK.
This temporary travel visa is valid for 30 days, which starts either 30 days before the course start date on your CAS or 7 days before your intended date of travel to the UK, whichever is later.
Please note:
From June 2020, Tier 4 temporary travel visas will be issued for a period of 90 days instead of 30.
This is in response travel disruption caused as a result of the global Covid-19 pandemic and will be in effect until the end of 2020.
You are usually required to collect your BRP within 10 days of arriving in the UK. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the requirement to self-isolate this 10 day deadline has been relaxed. You should collect your BRP as soon as possible upon completion of any required isolation.
Where you collect your BRP from will depend on information you include on your visa application form: it can either be the University or a designated Post Office.
Please be aware that from 20 January 2021, the University is not receiving BRPs on your behalf. If you have used the BRP ACL code in your visa application the BRP will be delivered direct to your UK address once you have provided evidence of your entry to the UK to the Immigration and Compliance Team. The Team will be in touch with you regarding this, if this applies to you.
The University would advise you to have your BRP sent to the University, for your ease (in times where lockdown requirements are not in place).
This is done by inserting a special Alternative Collection Location (ACL) code onto your visa application form - further details can be found below.
Please note that as of 20 January 2021, the University is not accepting BRPs on behalf of students due to current lockdown requirements and staff working from home. Instead if you have used the ACL code on your visa application the BRP will be delivered direct to your UK address once you have provided evidence of your entry to the UK.
In normal circumstances when lockdown restrictions are not in place the following applies:
If you would like your BRP card to be sent to the University of Warwick, we would recommend that you do, please use the ACL code included in your CAS email, to ensure you benefit from this service.
If you do not include our ACL code, or do not wish for your BRP card to be sent to the University of Warwick, your BRP will be available for collection from a Post Office when you arrive in the UK. You are, however, advised to use the ACL code so that the University receives the card for you.
Due to social distancing measures currently in place, it may prove difficult to collect your BRP safely from a Post Office.
The location of the Post Office will be determined by the correspondence address you use in your Tier 4 visa application form and you will be given detailed instructions as to how to collect your BRP card when you receive your 'decision letter'.
This is the letter that accompanies your passport with the new 30/90-day travel visa in it.
Alternatively, the UKVI may send this, via email, the email address you have used with your application.
PLEASE NOTE:
If your course end date is beyond 31 August 2024, then your BRP card will be valid until 31 December 2024 only.
This is because the UKVI is required to review its encryption technology no later than 31 December 2024.
By 30 June 2024, the UKVI will have issued guidance on how to obtain a new BRP card.
We understand that the new BRP card will be issued free of charge.
Please find below the answers to some useful questions about this process.
Please click on the relevant section below to expand the guidance.
-
On your Student Visa or 11 month extended short term study visa application form, when you get to the BRP collection page you need to insert a specific code into the 'Alternative Location' field.
The specific code is stated on the CAS email (Student Visa applicants), or in the visa support letter (extended short term study applicants).
**Please be aware that from 20 January 2021, the University has amended its process for BRPs. We are no longer receiving BRPs on behalf of students due to the current lockdown arrangements and all staff working from home until further notice. For BRPs produced from this date, where the ACL code is used the UKVI will send the BRP direct to your UK address by courier once they are sent confirmation that you are in the UK and identity checks have been conducted by the Immigration and Compliance Team. The Immigration and Compliance Team will be in touch if there is any information required from you relating to this so please keep an eye on your emails.**
Dependant applicants can also use this code in their application; if you wish for your dependants' BRPs to be sent to the University, please complete a form with their details so we know to expect receipt of these.
When the Home Office have processed your visa application they should send you a letter confirming where your BRP has been sent.
When the University receives your BRP card, we will email you to confirm it has been received. This email will inform you how and where you can collect it.
Please NOTE: If you arrive from a country which according to the UK Government Coronavirus regulations requires that you must self-isolate for 14 days from the date of your arrival in the UK, you must do that and only book an appointment to collect your BRP card from the University once you have completed the 14-day self-isolation period.
For more details on the Coronavirus regulations please follow this link: -
The University will follow the Home Office's process for getting your BRP corrected, which is a compulsory requirement.
The error will be reported to the Home Office who will arrange for a new BRP to be produced and sent to the University.
If you do not need your original BRP (with errors) then we will keep this locked in a safe until your new card is received.
When the new card is received we are required to destroy the card with errors and show evidence of this to the Home Office.
You will receive an email from the Immigration and Compliance team when the corrected card is received, advising you to make an appointment to collect the card from us.
Should you need the original BRP which contains errors (to open a bank account, for example) then you should make an appointment to collect this from us.
Information about how to do this will be included in the email you receive.
Please note that you are not advised to travel using a BRP card with errors, as the BRP card with errors will be cancelled when the corrected BRP card is produced.
When your new card is received and you arrange an appointment to collect it from us, you will need to bring in the BRP with errors for us to destroy.

If you did not use the ACL code for Warwick then your BRP will be sent to a designated Post Office. You cannot change this delivery address after your application is submitted.
When the Home Office have processed your visa application, they will write to you with the outcome of your application and this letter will contain details of the Post Office where you will need to collect your BRP.
If your BRP is being sent to a Post Office you will need to make arrangements to collect this yourself, within 10 days of your arrival in the UK. You will need to take your original passport and Home Office letter with you to collect this. Please be aware that in 2020, due to the requirement for people arriving from certain countries needing to self-isolate on arrival to the UK for 14 days, it is possible for you to exceed the usual 10 day deadline for collecting your BRP. If this applies to you, you should make arrangements to collect the BRP as soon as possible once the period of self-isolation has ended. If you have not completed your period of self-isolation the Post Office may turn you away. Should you be collecting your BRP from a Post Office and, due to a delay in your expected arrival in the UK or collection of your BRP, the Post Office have returned the BRP to the Home Office, you should inform the Home Office of this by reporting it on their website that you have had a problem collecting your BRP.
Once you have collected your BRP you will need to provide a copy of it to the University in order to complete enrolment.
You may upload this from the Enrolment Dashboard, if you are arriving at the start of your course, or using the visa upload form on the Immigration and Compliance website if providing this once you have completed enrolment.
You should provide your BRP copy to us before your temporary travel visa expires.
For your information we have produced a guide to collecting your BRP from the Post Office.
-
If your temporary travel visa expires before you are able to travel, you will need to make a 'BRP vignette transfer' application and obtain a new one.
You will have to pay a fee for this new application and provide your biometric information again by attending an appointment. Click on GOV website to find out how much you need to pay in your local currency (select: 'other' in visa category, then select 'show all').
You do not need a new CAS.
Information on applying for a replacement visa is available on GOV: Transfer visa.
You should use the same online application form that you used to apply for your Student visa but you should select the following options:
- Select your Nationality
- Select preferred Language
- Select BRP Vignette Transfer
Follow the next few screens to start the application form
At the end of the application form you should use the 'Any other information' field to explain that you have been granted a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK but you need a new travel vignette and give the relevant reason.
You must ensure that you will still be arriving by the latest start date on your CAS which is 6 April 2021 for most students.
When your new temporary travel visa is received, you need to notify the University of this. You should upload a copy of it to the visa upload form and choose the 'New temporary travel visa received due to delay in arrival to the UK' option.
-
The temporary travel vignette is a multiple entry visa, however, if you will be travelling outside of the UK you must make sure that your temporary travel visa is still valid on the date you intend to re-enter the UK.
You should collect your BRP as soon as possible upon arrival to the UK BUT AFTER ANY PERIOD OF REQUIRED SELF-ISOLATION HAS BEEN COMPLETED.
-
If your BRP has been sent to the Post Office, failure to collect it within 10 days of your arrival may result in you receiving a fine or cancellation/curtailment of your visa. However, please be aware that in 2020 due to the requirement for people arriving from certain countries needing to self isolate for 14 days upon arrival to the UK this 10 day deadline has been extended. You should make arrangements to collect your BRP as soon as possible after completion of the period of self isolation. The Post Office may turn you away if they become aware that you have not completed the required period of self-isolation.
If the University has received your BRP it is also okay for you to go over the 10 day deadline to enable you to collect your card at your BRP collection event. YOU MUST HAVE COMPLETED ANY REQUIRED PERIOD OF SELF-ISOLATION PRIOR TO ATTENDING AN APPOINTMENT TO COLLECT YOUR BRP. IF YOU HAVE NOT, YOU WILL BE TURNED AWAY.
You may refer to the enrolment webpages for information about booking an appointment to collect your BRP. You will also receive information in the email from the Immigration and Compliance Team which confirms we have received your BRP.
You should be aware that the Home Office require us to return the BRP to them if it has not been collected within a certain timeframe. This is usually 60 days but in 2020, due to delays because of the Coronavirus pandemic this may be extended to 60 days after your expected arrival date.

In short, no.
The Temporary Travel Visa is issued for 30 days and this is a multiple entry visa. From June 2020 until the end of the year, Student temporary travel visas will be issued for a period of 90 days instead of 30. This is in response to travel disruption caused as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
This means that if you will be travelling outside of and returning to the UK before the expiry date of your temporary travel visa there is no need for you to have obtained your BRP before you travel.
Due to security and other logistics concerns, we will not be distributing BRPs prior to the in-person events where travel will take place within the validity of your Temporary Travel Visa.
You should book your slot to attend an in-person visa check event, where you will be able to collect your BRP. YOU MUST HAVE COMPLETED ANY REQUIRED PERIOD OF SELF-ISOLATION PRIOR TO ATTENDING AN APPOINTMENT TO COLLECT YOUR BRP. IF YOU HAVE NOT, YOU WILL BE TURNED AWAY.
Information on when the in-person visa check events take place can be found on the enrolment website.
-
You are expected to collect your own BRP. The following exceptions apply:
if you:
- have a serious illness or disability that prevents you from collecting your permit; or
- are under 18 and you cannot collect your permit at the same time as your parent or legal guardian collects their own BRP
You may be able to nominate someone else to collect your permit on your behalf.
The nominated person will have to show your passport and vignette and show evidence of their own identity.
More information can be found in the UKVI guidance for applicants leaflet.
-
The Home Office have imposed strict security requirements about the storage and distribution of these BRP cards. Only certain members of staff authorised by the Home Office are permitted to handle BRPs.
A copy of your card will be scanned onto your student record so it is available for you to collect at a BRP collection event. The card will be stored in a safe until you come to collect it. When we have received your BRP card we will email you to confirm its receipt. This email will inform you how to make an appointment to collect your BRP, where you need to collect this from and what you need to bring with you to do so.
YOU MUST HAVE COMPLETED ANY PERIOD OF SELF-ISOLATION PRIOR TO COLLECTING YOUR BRP. IF YOU HAVE NOT, YOU WILL BE TURNED AWAY.

Yes, Warwick is happy to receive your dependants' BRPs too.
In order for us to ensure your dependants' cards are stored with yours and are available to collect at the same time, you must complete an online form filling in all applicable details, as well as uploading a copy of the UKVI Decision Letter for your dependants.
This will help us to match their BRP cards with yours.
When completing the dependant visa application form online they should also use the ACL stated in your CAS on the BRP collection page.

If your course starts in a partner institution or in a teaching site which is outside of the UK, for example, at Warwick in Venice, you may need to come to the UK first to collect the residence permit before starting your course outside of the UK.
If you are unable to come to the UK first, please contact us for more advice.
-
You will receive an invitation asking you to complete your online course registration up to 6 weeks prior to your course start date.
Information can be found on the enrolment webpages.
-
This is not possible.
The Home Office have confirmed to us that in this circumstance it is not possible to apply for a new temporary travel visa to allow you to enter the UK earlier than originally planned.
You are advised to change your travel plans so that you arrive after the start date of your temporary travel visa.
Please be aware that we will be unable to enrol you on your course if you fail to enter the UK within the validity of your Student Visa temporary travel visa.

Outside of lockdown arrangements and when the University is open and staff working in the office:
We would recommend that if possible, you choose to have your BRP sent to the University using the Alternative Collection Location (ACL) code in your CAS email.
However, if you have already submitted your Tier 4 application and have not used the ACL code, you will need to follow a certain procedure to enable you to collect your BRP from a Post Office if you are under 18 at the time of your arrival.
It is not possible to change the delivery of your BRP to Warwick if you have submitted your application and chosen for the BRP to be sent to a Post Office.
The IFP team will assist you in this procedure, please complete our online enquiry form, providing us with confirmation you will require assistance with this and we will respond to you as soon as possible.

When the University is not under lockdown arrangements and staff are working in the office:
We would recommend that, if possible, you choose to have your BRP sent to the University using the ACL code in your CAS email as this will mean we will receive it on your behalf and there is no need for an adult to accompany you to collect it.
However, if you have already submitted your visa application and have not used the ACL code, you will need to follow a certain procedure to enable you to collect your BRP from a Post Office. Collection of a BRP must be done after completion of any required period of self-isolation. The Post Office or University may turn you away if you have not completed this.
It is not possible to change the delivery of your BRP to Warwick if you have submitted your application and chosen for the BRP to be sent to a Post Office.
As you will be under 18 you need to be accompanied by a responsible adult, someone who is over 18 years, when you go to the Post Office.
You should follow the process below:
1) You should identify someone over 18 years old in the UK who will be able to accompany you to the Post Office
- You must register the responsible adult who will be accompanying you by informing the UKVI using the online service at https://www.gov.uk/biometric-residence-permits/collect with the following information:
- your full name;
- your date of birth;
- your nationality;
- your passport number;
- a contact telephone number;
- your case reference number.
- You must also provide the following information about the responsible adult accompanying you to collect your permit:
- their full name;
- their date of birth;
- their nationality;
- the document they will use to prove their identity;
- their identity document reference number;
- the identity document expiry date;
- their email address;
- how the responsible adult is related to you.
- If approved, you and the responsible adult will receive an authorisation email.
- You and the responsible adult will need to present these to the Post Office Customer Service Adviser at the time of collection and you will not be able to collect your permit without them. Remember that you must have completed any period of self-isolation prior to collecting your BRP.
