Name: Marina Borunova
Pre-University Summer School course studied: A Taste of Economics and Finance in 2024

What encouraged you to choose to join the Warwick Summer School?

I have always wanted to do a summer school and visit the UK to see some universities, so when I saw that Warwick was one of the summer schools I was available to join, I took that opportunity. It was also very important for me to see campus life and try out economics at a university level, so the Pre-University Warwick Summer School I came across fulfilled all of those criteria's.

What skills and knowledge did you gained during the 10 days that you have found most beneficial?

I gained a lot of knowledge not only in the lectures about economics and finance but also during the beneficial workshop sessions. I found the “applying to the UK” session important and very useful, as applying to UK universities was something I was uncertain about and lost in, so this was fantastic to get some information on.

I also enjoyed getting to know the people on and involved in the programme - the summer school participants, teachers, and current Warwick students. All the staff were very insightful and willing to share their experiences at Warwick, which was particularly useful in my decision-making regarding my future university pick.

Did you build any new friendships during your time on the summer school?

I definitely built some friendships during the summer school, and some I still remain in contact with even now, a month after the summer school ended. There were also some opportunities in which I successfully built friendships outside of the flat group and managed to have fun with those people in the free time of summer school.

What was your highlight of taking part in Warwick Summer School?

My highlight was the lecture about behavioural economics. This was one of my favourite parts of the whole course. Another highlight was the team-building experience with the different activities presented there. Also worth mentioning was the Lion King musical in London, and I was genuinely shocked to get an opportunity to attend this phenomenal performance!

Last of my highlights was the Oxford trip and the trip to the Boom Battle Bar as these were very memorable moments where we had a bit more freedom and were able to form our friendships once again and explore different areas, whether it was the city of oxford or the various games in the boom battle bar.

What advice would you give to future students participating in the Warwick Summer School to get the most out of the programme?

For a fulfilling experience, I recommend that future students of the Warwick summer school programme get to know their ambassadors. It was exciting to see and hear what their experiences were like at Warwick. I also suggest getting out of your comfort zone and getting to know new and different people who aren't from your countries, as the summer school participants were very international. It’s cool to make connections with people from all around the world.
