New Food Waste Recycling Bins – Let's Ace Food Waste together!
A new food waste recycling initiative will launch across on-campus residences on the 31st March. The Let’s Ace Food WasteLink opens in a new window campaign aims to help students use all of the food that they buy, while encouraging them to properly separate and correctly dispose of any unavoidable food waste, like eggshells and teabags.
Almost a third of all food produced for human consumption is wasted every year, contributing around 8% of the world’s greenhouse gases. Preventing food waste could save the average UK household approximately £437 per year and would reduce CO2 emissions equivalent to taking 1 in 4 cars off the road, so there are huge benefits to us reducing the amount of edible food that gets wasted. Students can find top tips on shopping, storing, prepping and cooking to prevent food waste on the Let’s Ace Food WasteLink opens in a new window page, as well as guidance and information on food recycling.
Under the new food recycling system, students living in on-campus accommodations will be required to use food waste caddies provided in their residences. These caddies will allow students to separate food waste from general waste so that it can go to Biffa’s Anaerobic Digester to create biogas and bio fertiliser.
This initiative is part of a broader commitment to reduce waste on campus and promote environmentally friendly habits. By participating, students will play a crucial role in reducing waste and supporting a cleaner, greener campus.
