DAHL Showcase 2023 - Get inspired!

This year's theme of the DAHL Showcase is 'Community and Belonging'. Browse this page to find inspiration for your competition entry!

If you have further questions, please contact Dr. Robert O'Toole via Teams Chat.

Here are some questions you could ask yourself to find out how your entry could be related to the theme of 'community':

  • Does your work have an impact on a specific community?

  • Are you representing a community?

  • Or is your work a commentary on community, belonging, identity?

Possible topics include but are not limited to community-building, space and community, conflicts within and among communities, the individual in relation to their communities, community-specific knowledge and perspectives, identity/ies and belonging, communities changing over time, finding one's community, etc.

We have a broad interpretation of this, so you can cover any of these points or interpret the theme in your own way - surprise us!

Make sure to check out the following three projects which make use of digital tools in the context of the Arts:

Research: discovering fascinating connections in the past

Prof Michael Scott making connections on a map Professor Michael Scott (Classics and Ancient Civilisations) argues for the value of seeing connections on a global scale. In our increasingly globalised world, this is important to help us to make sense of life today, how it came to be as it is, and what it might become.

Social impact: connecting people in the past, the present and the future

In this example we consider a virtual reality experience by Catherine Allen (CEO of VR consultancy Limina Immersive, Warwick Theatre Studies alumnus). Think about how it uses digital storytelling to create a very personal and transformative experience. The aim was to make a personal connection between the participant and the historical figure: empathy. You could achieve the same using other storytelling mediums: podcasts, video, blogs, live events. Catherine Allen

Innovation: creating new connections for the future

Robert O'Toole using VR Assoc. Professor Robert O'Toole describes how he uses an Arts perspective to see the potential in new technologies, making fresh connections that inspire design innovations that work for real people. This approach is called Design Thinking. Arts and Humanities graduates are often really good at it.
