Introduction to programming and data

About this session

Date: 15th May 2024

Presenters: Robert O'Toole

Main follow-up contact: Robert O'Toole

Overview: In this workshop we will learn about how programming is an essential skill for digital arts and humanities students and researchers. We consider the difference between application development and smaller scale programming we call tinkering. We do this, and learn some programming and data concepts, through examples: data analysis in Jupyter Notebooks with Python (to tell a close-up human story, and to look for patterns that test a hypothesis); a Raspberry Pi Pico hardware example (often used in interactive museum exhibits); and making interactive and data rich web pages with Javascript and jQuery. There are accompanying web pages for all of this, with links to support you in going further. However, the key thing is to get an idea of what is possible, decide what you want to explore further, and we can support you in doing that. By the Spring Term of 2024 we should also have access to online courses from LinkedIn Learning to support us in learning more.
