Medicine and the Media in Late Nineteenth- and Twentieth-Century Britain

One Day Conference
1 February 2003
Organiser: Vicky Long

This conference aimed to examine the impact of media representations of medicine in the twentieth century, tapping into the interests of historians, sociologists and researchers in gender studies. The idea for the conference stemmed from my own interest in whether forms of media provide a forum for debate, education and the participation of the public on policy formation in mental health work. The papers presented considered the interactions between medicine, the media and audiences in shaping popular attitudes and representations (television, films, exhibitions, newspapers, novels and popular science books). New research being undertaken by postgraduate students working in the area was incorporated and emphasised.

Speakers: Virginia Berridge • Sophie Blanch • Tim Boon • Dan O'Conner • Julia Hallam • Sheryl Root
