Masters, Brethren and Patrons of the Lord Leycester, 1571-1700
This page provides biographies of some of the brethren, the masters and the patrons of the Lord Leycester whose lives have been uncovered during the research for this exhibition. This page is still a work in progress; the appendix of Angus’s thesis will contain a complete list of the brethren, masters and patrons with the references.
The Brethren
Richard Biddle. Admitted 11 January 1698 and succeeded on 28 November 1704 (resident for 6 years).
George Carter. Admitted 15 January 1678 and succeeded on 27 February 1702 (resident for 24 years). Took the place of his relation Thomas Carter, who died before admission.
Richard Dereham. Admitted in 1591 through a warrant issued by Queen Elizabeth I on 14 June 1691; succeeded on 13 February 1639, making him one of the longest serving brothers admitted to the hospital (resident for almost 47 years). He was probably originally from Worcester, but also had connections to Denbigh and Radnor.
Edward Faulkner. Admitted 18 July 1654; succeeded 24 February 1669 from Long Itchington, Warwickshire. Faulkner was a servant for the Sidney family (resident for 13 years). An inventory of his estate is provided on page 15.
Little John Flood. A yeoman named in the Hospital’s 1585 and 1589 deeds of incorporation. ‘Little John’ Flood appears in Robert Dudley’s household accounts as a groom of the stable. He also took part in Dudley’s grand funeral procession from Kenilworth to Warwick Castle in 1587.
Richard Gardner. Little surviving evidence. One of the first brothers admitted. We know that he took part in Robert Dudley’s grand funeral procession from Kenilworth to Warwick Castle in 1587.
John Gilbert. A brother named in the Hospital's 1592 deed of incorporation. John Gilbert was mentioned in Simon Adams' household accounts as being present at the funeral of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, October 1588.
Thomas Greysley. Mr Thomas Greysley was named in the Hospital's 1585 deed of incorporation. A Mr Gresley was mentioned in Simon Adams' household accounts.
John Hancocke. Hancocke was named in the Hospital's 1585 deed incorporation. A John Hancox was mentioned in Simon Adams' household accounts as an attendant at the funeral of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester.
George Hartcourt (Harcourt). Patent of admission recorded on 24 April 1648 and was succeeded on 7 May 1651.
Bartholomew Heath. Patent of admission recorded on 4 September 1567 and was succeeded on 23 February 1618 (resident for 22 years). It is likely he was connected to the influential Heath family. Originally from Warwick.
John Humphrys. Patent of admission recorded on 29 July 1692 and was succeeded on 23 August 1726 (resident for 34 years).
Francis Hunt. Patent of admission recorded on 1 December 1616 and was succeeded on 24 April 1649 (resident for 32 years).
Thomas Jeneway. Succeeded on 20 September 1646. Was recorded to have undertaken lots of errands on behalf of the hospital.
Hugh Jones. Patent of admission 10 February 1636 and was succeeded on 10 April 1651 (resident for 15 years).
Richard Makyns (Warwick). Noted in the Hospital's deed of incorporation 1589.
John Miles. Patent of admission 20 December 1647 and succeeded on 2 February 1668 (resident for 20 years). Noted as a very important servant of the Sidney family; may have been in charge of Leicester House in London.
Thomas Parsons. Succeeded on 1 December 1616. Mentioned as the predecessor to Francis Hunt.
Alexander Saxon. Noted in the Hospital's deed of incorporation 1585, may have been originally from Warwick.
Nicholas Scott. Very little is known; noted as Father Nicholas Scott.
John Stowe. Patent of admission 10 October 1650. Stowe was likely a servant of the Sidney Family. He was admitted despite the reservations regarding his behaviour by the Master Timothy White highlighting the strength of patronage. He was expelled from the almshouse on 14 February 1656 because his estate was too considerable. He was also an old servant of the Spencer and Sidney families.
Robery Sydney. Patent of admission 7 April 1663 and was succeeded on 30 December 1667. Potentially a distant relative of the patron Sidney family.
John Terry. Patent of admission 1 January 1633 and was succeeded on 10 October 1650 (resident for 16 years). Originally from Penshurst, Kent. Yeoman, labourer, servant to the Sidney family and likely the Sidney gamekeeper/deer-keeper.
John Thomas. Noted in the Hospital's deed of incorporation 1593. A John Thomas is mentioned in Simon Adams' household accounts as a groom of the stable, 1587.
Francis Whetstone. Patent of admission 1 November 1625 and was succeed on 2 May 1653 (resident for 27 years). Originally from Kenilworth. He was described as a yeoman and labourer and in his patent of admission was described as someone who could no longer labour.
Richard Wigley. Patent of admission 30 May 1676 and was succeeded on 9 June 1687 (resident for 11 years). Originally from Long Itchington. Servant of the Sidney Family and may have had a room as Penshurst, Kent.
Henry Wilson. Patent of admission 20 December 1671 and succeed on 14 May 1672 (resident for 146 days). Originally from Warwick.
John Wisdom. Patent of admission 20 September 1646 and was succeeded on 13 May 1671 (resident for 24 years). Soldier served in Ireland against the rebels. Possible connection to Humphrey Wisdom.
Humphrey Wisdom. Patent of admission 8 March 1645 and was succeed 1653 (resident for 8 years). Soldier served Ireland against the rebels. Possible connection to John Wisdom.
William Woodgate. Admitted 27 December 1690 and was expelled on 23 November 1704 (resident for 13 years).
Henry Yardley. Patent of admission 2 May 1653 and was succeeded on 18 April 1689 (resident for 35 years). Originally from Kenilworth. Described as 'aged, blynd, and past all bodily labour for his livelyhood'. There is a possible connection to the influential Warwick family of the same name.
Thomas Yardley. Patent of admission 2 December 1656 and was succeed on 21 January 1657 (resident for 50 days). Originally from Warwick. Potential relation to Henry Yardley.
