In Honour of Colin Jones

Colin Jones. Eighteenth-Century France:

Art, Revolution, Science, and Medicine

Recordings of event below

Colin Jones is well known to French history for his distinguished research on multiple aspects of the social and cultural history of the long and revolutionary eighteenth century. In addition, he has long been a generous mentor to early and mid-career colleagues. Across these two short online events, a group of Colin’s mentees celebrate what his work and his mentorship have meant and mean to us personally and professionally on his retirement from Queen Mary, University of London. Some of us encountered Colin Jones during his time in posts at the universities of Newcastle, Exeter, Warwick, QMUL, Chicago, Richmond, Stanford, Paris and Renmin, others at Phd vivas, during conferences, seminars, and in the canteen at the Bibliothèque Nationale.

Originally planned as a series of in person panels the Covid-19 pandemic has forced us to rethink and shorten the format of our celebration for the time being, but these two sessions no doubt mark only the beginning of the International French History community’s recognition of Colin’s rich ongoing contributions. Fittingly, given Colin’s inclusive approach to the field, the online format brings his mentees and colleagues from Texas to Melbourne, via Minnesota, Florida, Paris, Geneva, Exeter, and London, together. From nuns to plague tracts, hospitals to entrepreneurial charlatans, and smiles to Robespierre and Thermidor, Colin Jones’ work and mentorship continues to shape research into ancien-regime and revolutionary France.
