‘Flyover Country’: Eastern Europe and Global History

Eastern Europe has been conspicuous by its relative absence in the burgeoning field of global history. Why is that the case? At a time when scholars claim to care about the global reach of the field into supposed peripheries, the region of Eastern Europe has remained ‘flyover country’. This talk explores some of the reasons behind this situation: from the forgotten traditions of ‘global’ scholarship in Eastern Europe to contemporary blind spots of global history scholars. Eastern Europe history, too often ignored, has the potential to uncover assumptions baked into current debates about globality in academia.
