United Kingdom

Introduction

Although the UK was not a separate focus of this study, members of the team have worked extensively on the history of public office in the UK and on contemporary issues in relation to standards in public life. The UK approach, which identifies principles of public life and seeks to ensure that these become part of the culture of administrative and political institutions within the UK is one which emphasises judgment and integrity, rather than rules, incentives and disincentives. Papers by members of the team relevant to reflection on issues in standards in the UK can be found in Related Papers; while a range of material about standards in the UK is referenced in Resources. The scenarios were in part derived from research undertaken by the Committee on Standards in Public Life.
