Venice Summer School 2019

Cultural Exchange in Renaissance Europe: Texts and Objects

The Centre for the Study of the Renaissance (University of Warwick) is pleased to invite applications for a doctoral Summer School in Venice on Cultural Exchange in Renaissance Europe: Texts and Objects for 27 May-7 June 2019. The Summer School is a collaboration between Warwick’s CSR, the Charles S. Singleton Center for the Study of Premodern Europe (Johns Hopkins University), and the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere e Arti, together with the University of Venice (Ca' Foscari). Over a period of two weeks, PhD students from Warwick, JHU, Ca' Foscari and other institutions from across the world will be involved in lectures, seminars, and site visits illuminating the mechanisms of cultural exchange and the methodology of studying both texts and objects for the Renaissance period. Venice and its environs will be used as a lense onto broader cultural issues throughout Europe.

The Summer School will be articulated in four blocks, dealing respectively with:

• history of art • history of science and medicine • history of the book and libraries • literature and theatre

Lectures and seminars will be delivered mainly by staff from Warwick (Ingrid De Smet, David Lines, Lorenzo Pericolo, Caroline Petit), JHU (Shane Butler, Stephen Campbell, Larry Principe, Eugenio Refini), and the Istituto Veneto (Gherardo Ortalli). Many of the sessions will run as seminars or on-site lectures, with discussion of predistributed reading materials.

Site visits will take in several of the key monuments and museums in Venice as well as in the surrounding region, including Padua and Bologna.
