Stuart's research focus is the study of Shakespeare in performance, specifically contemporary British performance. He has also written about Shakespeare’s plays in context and performance histories of plays such as the Henry VI trilogy, Othello and Measure for Measure. Stuart is also an acknowledged expert on undergraduate research. He has visited the UK Parliament and the White House, and he has spoken about his work all over the world. His most recent publication is a monograph, 'Shakespeare in the Theatre: Peter Hall', published by Bloomsbury in 2019
As well as writing several monographs and articles on Shakespeare, Stuart is on the editorial board of the Routledge journal Shakespeare, and was elected Head of the British Shakespeare Association (2010-2016). Stuart is also a contributor to the 2017 Guinness Book of World Records and General Editor (with Bridget Escolme) of the Palgrave series Shakespeare in Practice, which aims to bring a theatre studies approach to the study of Shakespeare in performance.
Beyond Shakespeare Studies, Stuart has a reputation for his work pioneering various undergraduate research projects. He is one of the founders of the British Conference on Undergraduate Research (bcur.org) and the annual Posters in Parliament. Stuart speaks regularly at conferences around the world about the importance of undergraduate research and has been an international advisor to the Australasian Conference on Undergraduate Research. In 2013, Stuart won a £240,000 grant from the HEFCE Catalyst Fund to support the growth of BCUR.
