GSD Single Honours Optional Module Preference Form

As a first year GSD single honours student you have 60 CATS to spend on optional modules. 30 CATS of these must be used on optional modules offered by the School for Cross-faculty Studies (SCFS). You can use the remaining 30 CATS on modules offered by external departments, subject to approval by the GSD Director of Undergraduate Studies and with the permission of the relevant external departments. If you wish, however, you can use these remaining 30 CATS to take more SCFS optional modules.

SCFS optional modules are offered on a 'first come, first served' basis', and some modules have very limited capacity, in particular those offered by Design Studies, i.e., 'DI' coded modules. We will try out best to accommodate all requests, but just be aware this is not always possible.

Taking modules in external departments

Any modules taken in external departments must be appropriate for first year study, i.e., level 1 undergraduate modules. You can check a module’s level on the University’s Module Catalogue.

External modules can pose additional and unexpected demands on students. You must familiarise yourself with the other department’s rules, from an administrative (module registration, deadlines, extensions, use of Tabula/Moodle/MyWBS, etc) and teaching/learning perspective, such as assessment types and style, referencing rules, expectations for assessments/submissions, marking scales and criteria, etc. It is your responsibility to seek out and become fully aware of the information that you may need.

PLEASE NOTE: 'EC' coded modules are not available this year (i.e., modules run by the Department of Economics).

Modules registration opens on Student Records Online (e:Vision) in Welcome Week at 9am on Wednesday the 1st of October 2025. Remember to wait for the Director of Undergraduate Studies’ approval before registering for any external modules.

Please complete this form by the end of Welcome Week at the latest.

Once the GSD DUGS has confirmed your SCFS modules, then register for them on e:Vision immediately. Shortly after this you will gain Moodle access and be automatically allocated to a seminar group for each SCFS module. You will be able to view your seminar allocations on Tabula via the 'Timetable' and 'Events' tabs.

If you get approval from the GSD DUGS to take any external modules, then please contact the relevant external departments to get their permission to take their modules, assuming you have not already done so. Once you have their permission, register these external modules on e:Vision. Please note: for WBS modules you will also need to register with them via their modules and assessment platform myWBS in addition to e:Vision.

Total CATS Distribution Across Terms

In addition to your 60 CATS of optional modules, you have 60 CATS of core GSD modules. 30 CATS in term 1 (GD104, GD105) and 30 CATS in term 2 (GD105, GD107). You are automatically registered on these modules. In total, including your core modules and your 60 CATS of optional modules, you must have an even split of CATS across terms 1 and 2, i.e. 60 CATS in term 1 and 60 CATS in term 2. However, if you opt to take a term 3 module, such as GD109, your CATS split must be the following: 60 CATS in term 1, 45 CATS in term 2, and 15 CATS in term 3.

Please indicate which CATS split reflects your core modules and the optional modules you have added to this form: (required)
