GSD Dissemination Event 2023

****You may find here the final day schedule ****

We are updating this page regularly. GSD finalists will receive a Moodle announcement message as soon as any key information is added to this page.

Welcome to the GSD Dissemination Event 2023!
  • When: Friday 28 April 2023, 9 am - 6 pm
  • Where: Ramphal BuildingLink opens in a new window
  • What: We are looking forward to this one-day event where GSD finalists will present the research projects that they have conducted as part of their Dissertation moduleLink opens in a new window. It will be an opportunity for finalists to receive feedback, learn about others' research projects, and gain valuable experience in presenting research and networking. There will be an array of different presentation styles, including spoken presentations and poster presentations
  • Who: In addition to all GSD finalists and GSD staff members, we have invited other departmental stakeholders to maximise the opportunities for networking and feedback
  • How: Finalists will present their research in parallel sessions (Schedule will be published in mid-April). As a standard, they have 10 minutes for spoken presentation and 5 minutes for their poster presentation. The presentation itself will be assessed, as the dissemination is a key component of the Dissertation module. They will also have an additional 10 minutes for questions from the audience and feedback; the Q&A session is not assessed, so please feel free to ask as many questions as you like! Remember that the presenters will finalise their Dissertation for submission the week following this event: what a great opportunity to get feedback on their research!
  • Food and drinks will be provided, and we encourage participants to continue conversations about research projects outside of sessions (during the drinks reception, breaks...etc.). Enjoy!

Organizers: Gioia Panzarella (GSD Director of Student Experience) and Kirsten Lim (GSD Student Ambassador)

FAQ

You may get in touch with Gioia Panzarella if you have further questions.

IN PREPARATION FOR THE EVENT:

1. Can I amend the title of my presentation?

Not at this stage - the draft schedule published on 14 April included instructions on how to provide an amended title by 21 April, it is no longer possible to amend the title on the published schedule, unless of course there has been a mistake on our side (please email Gioia if that's the case). That said, you can certainly tweak it when presenting, or in your written submission.

2. Can I amend the time of my presentation?

In mid-April, the draft schedule of the event will be published; if there are mitigating circumstances or clashes with other assessments, please let Gioia know as soon as possible so that she can amend the schedule.

3. Do you I have to attend the whole day?

You are only required to attend the session that you are presenting on. However, the event only fully works if people attend others' presentations as well! This is because you can expect questions and feedback from the audience, so the richer the audience, the better! Ideally, it would be ideal if all presenters could attend at least another session (in addition to the one they are presenting on). Needless to say, you are more than welcome to attend the whole day :)

4. I am disseminating my research in another format, outside of the dissemination event. Do I have to attend the event?

Attending the dissemination event is a monitoring point for all final year GSD students (you can see a full list of your monitoring points on Tabula, under "attendance"). Students who are not disseminating their research at the event should attend at least one session and record their attendance with Gioia (she will be available at the registration desk all day). If you are unable to attend, you should contact Gioia via email. As per GSD Handbook, only absences due to mitigating circumstances will be recorded as missed authorised.

5. Help! I am unwell and I am unable to present at the dissemination event. What should I do?

Please request an extension via Tabula (under 'Assignments' and then 'Upcoming'). As usual, extensions can only be approved if there are mitigating circumstances (as per Handbook). Once your extension is approved, you will receive instructions for submission from the department.

ON THE DAY OF THE EVENT:

6. Will I receive a printed copy of the Schedule at the event?

To limit paper waste, we are not printing copies of the Schedule, which will be available on this page. QR codes directing to this link will be available in the spaces of the event. If you wish us to print a copy of the programme for you, please request it by emailing Gioia.

7. Will disposable cups be available at the Dissemination event?

We will have some cups available. However, following feedback from the GSD SSLC last year, we would like to invite all participants to bring their own cup to the event, to limit waste. We will be monitoring how this works, so that we can progressively eliminate the provision of disposable cups in our departmental events.

8. What should I wear at the Dissemination Event?

The dress code is smart casual, or what you would normally wear for your in-person seminars and lectures.

This event showcases GSD Finalists' research projects as part of the GD307 Dissertation module. Students can access guidance on their 'Dissemination' assessment on MoodleLink opens in a new window.

We invite all speakers and guests to respect each other. Anyone causing disruption will be asked to leave. Be reminded that presentations are assessed, so please put your phone on silent or turn it off before entering a session.

Registration form available here (GSD Finalists DO NOT need to register unless they have any dietary/access requirements)
