GSD external module request form

This form must be completed if you would like to take an external module (not offered by the GSD department and/or the School for Cross-faculty Studies) as part of your optional module choice for the upcoming academic year. Please submit a separate copy of this form for each external module you wish to request approval for. All requests will be reviewed by the GSD Director of Undergraduate Studies.

Note: This form is for external module requests only. All first-year and second-year Global Sustainable Development students are asked to fill in a separate form to inform the Department of their GSD module preferences in the upcoming academic year. Information on that form is communicated separately. Ensure that your external module selections adhere to the appropriate year of study: we will not approve non-Y2 modules in second year or non-finalist modules in final year.

Note that you can take no more than 15 CATS (if joint honours) or no more than 30 CATS from the same external department (if single honours) – see GSD Handbook linked above.

4. As part of this module approval process, you need to write a brief paragraph (max 100 words) to explain the GSD focus of this module. What will this module teach you about GSD? Why does this module constitute a valid alternative to a GSD module as part of your GSD module choice?

5. As part of the module approval process, you will need to check with the relevant department whether the module is open to you (e.g. ask if the module is open to students on you specific degree and their year of study) and whether there is space for you. This question should be addressed to the relevant department’s undergraduate office, not each module convenor. It is your responsibility to make such arrangements. Did you receive confirmation from the other department? Please provide any information in the box below.

6. External modules can pose additional and unexpected demands on students. You must familiarise yourself with the other department’s rules, from an administrative (module registration, deadlines, extensions, use of Tabula/Moodle/MyWBS, etc) and teaching/learning perspective, such as assessment types and style, referencing rules, expectations for assessments/submissions, marking scales and criteria, etc. It is your responsibility to seek out and become fully aware of the information that you may need. Please comment here on any challenges that you feel you may face in taking the module above, and that you accept this responsibility by applying to take an external module.

7. If applying for a WIISP module, confirm you know these are intensive blended modules delivered over 2-4 weeks in Term 3. Having checked your term 3 deadlines and dates of the module that you are interested in, please comment here on the feasibility of this. Please note that these modules are credit-bearing, so your average will be affected by them, and you can take up to 2 per year. Also note that, if you are taking exams in Term 3, you will receive the exam timetable no earlier than end of April.
