GSD to welcome renowned artist for public lab and paper cutting workshop

The GSD department will be hosting a reputable artist for a collaborative public event that uses art and design to explore sustainability themes such as migration, food security, and climate change.

Sijia Chen is an Los Angeles-based multimedia artist recognised for her large-scale sculptures and intricate papercut collages that utilise materials such as government forms, menus, and photographs to narrate the complexities of migration and identity. Her artwork has been displayed in collections at Victoria and Albert Museum, Inside-Out Art Museum, Guangdong Art Museum, GAFA Art Museum, and the Art Museum of Shantou University.

Breaking away from the typical public lecture, this experimental lab will invite members of the public and the university community to participate in a paper cutting workshop with Sijia, with the aim to demonstrate how artistic exploration can be used to encourage engagement with sustainability issues.

The workshop will be preceded by a talk from GSD Associate Professor Dr Wes Lin, who will guide attendees through an online photography exhibition titled Care-fully Plate-Up, which was inspired and curated following his UKRI research project on the double burden of childhood malnutrition in China.

The public lab will be taking place on Tuesday 10th June at 12pm in FAB 0.08 within the Faculty of Arts Building at the University of Warwick. To find out more about this event and to register your attendance, please visit this page.
