This module explores the evolving role of mega-events, such as international sporting events, large-scale festivals, global expos, and policy summits including COP conferences, with a focus on sustainability. Students will engage with futurology, examining how emerging trends and innovations such as digital media, VR, and environmental initiatives will influence the future of mega-events in their many forms. The module emphasises the integration of sustainable practices within mega-events (including festivals, expos, and cultural gatherings), considering social, environmental, and economic factors. By the end of the course, students will have a comprehensive understanding of how mega-events and sustainability intersect, equipping them to address future challenges while contributing to more sustainable and inclusive practices.
Principal Aims
This module fosters critical analysis of the future impact of mega events on sustainability while gaining the skills to innovate and address global challenges.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module, students should be able to:
- Understand the key trends shaping the future of mega-events, including technological advancements, globalization, and the evolving role of social media.
- Examine the relationship between mega-events, technology, and innovation, with an emphasis on how emerging technologies are transforming performance, fan engagement, and event management.
- Analyse the impact of social and environmental factors on the future of mega-events, including issues of sustainability, diversity, and inclusion.
- Propose strategies for navigating the future of mega-events considering economic, cultural, and political dimensions.
