A week in the life of a GSD student

Person running down a lane

Hello! This week I thought I would try and give you more of an idea about what to expect from university by running through a ‘week in my life’. I would first like to start off by saying that no two people will have exactly the same timetable and mix of activities in the day – this will vary depending on what modules you pick and what sports clubs and societies you choose to get involved in! However, I hope to shed a light on the differences between university and sixth-form/ college – specifically how you have much more flexibility and control over your own schedule.

Image of University timetable. Monday shows: 10 am lecture (The Energy Trilemma), an 11am lecture (Debt, Money and GSD), a 1pm Dissertation lecture and a 3pm seminar (The Energy Trilemma). Tuesday shows a 10am lecture (Social Movements and Political Action). Wednesday is blank. Thursday shows a 1pm seminar (Debt, Money and GSD). Friday shows a 2pm seminar (Social Movement and Political Action).

The picture above is my term 1 timetable, as you can see Monday was a busy day! I would be in lectures until 2pm and then have an hour-long break before my seminar at 3-5pm. It’s quite unusual to have so many contact hours in a single day at university (as you can see, the rest of my week is fairly quiet). However, I liked that I received a lot of the content at the start of the week, which I could then apply to the readings and independent study that I carried out for my seminars on Thursday and Friday.

On Monday evenings I would then head over to the sports centre straight after my ‘Energy Trilemma’ seminar to go on a cross-country run with Athletics society, which is a really good end to the day!

Typically I prefer to study on campus, so I aim to get in at 10 or 11 am and then spend a full day at university. When I am working towards a deadline or exam, I go to one of the ‘silent’ floors in the library, as you have your own desk to work and I find it to be the most focused space on campus. If I want to have a more relaxed day I will go to one of the learning grids with my friends, as you can talk here and have a more social study session. How you choose to use your time is entirely up to you, some people also like to work from home.

One of my favourite days of the week at Warwick is Wednesday, there is no teaching in the afternoon as this is reserved for sports and Varsity matches. On Wednesdays, I would head over to the gym to do circuits with Athletics club, and then in the evening, there is the student night at the Students Union called ‘Pop!’ which is a really fun event that most of the sports clubs and societies attend.

Hopefully, that gives you a better idea the sort of things you might get up to in a week at Warwick as a GSD student.
