Personal tutors

Dr Stephanie Panichelli-Batalla (Head of the School for Cross-faculty Studies) teaching GSD students in a classroom

A beneficial aspect of studying GSD at Warwick is the personal tutor system. This post outlines what a personal tutor is, their role and how they can help you when you're at Warwick.

When you arrive on campus you'll be assigned a GSD academic who'll be your first point of call within the Department. Their role encompasses academic help, pastoral support and assistance with applications and references. If you're studying a joint honours degree, your personal tutor is likely to be an academic with experience or an interest in your partner field, which can be very helpful when you're thinking about module choices and life after university.

Starting at university can be a little daunting and you may have concerns about your adjustment between school or college to a higher academic setting. Your personal tutor will be there to help you with this transition, whether you have questions about how to reference, writing essays or working on group presentations.

Your personal tutor can also help you choose which modules to take and point you to additional academic support services, like classes on how to write in academic language or analyse journal articles. Later in your academic journey, you personal tutor can help you with job applications or by writing references.

Alongside academic help, your personal tutors can give pastoral support. University is a time of transition and can sometimes be challenging. If you're experiencing any challenges regarding your wellbeing, your personal tutor can be a source of support or can point you in the direction of Warwick's wellbeing services that provide self-help resources, counselling and specialist workshops.

Of course, everyone in the GSD Department is happy to help and your personal tutor is just one way in which you'll be supported throughout your time at Warwick. If you have any questions about the personal tutor system or anything else, please use the button below and get in touch.
