Mapping Warwick's contributions to the SDGs
The Sustainable Development Goal Mapping project is an eight month project that aims to develop an understanding of Warwick University's current research contributions towards the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The UN Sustainable Development Goals, also known as the SDGs or global goals, are a set of 17 goals, 169 targets and 247 indicators that aim to advance and stimulate social, economic and environmental sustainability and development. The Sustainable Development Goals, whilst split into 17 distinct groups of targets, are interconnected in nature, and so this project takes a nexus approach to looking at how research contributes to the various SDG's.
The SDG's are a collection of global targets that rely on widespread, cross sector implementation by the private sector, public sector and local, national and international governments. Due to the nature of many of the targets, which require advancing knowledge and technologies in order to achieve the goals, university research plays a vital role in driving towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Contributions towards the SDGs that this project hope to map can be defined as any actions that link to SDG goals and targets in a progressive way.
More information about the seventeen SDG's, and their targets and indicators can be found here: THE 17 GOALS | Sustainable Development (un.org). A shorter summary of the targets can be found here.
Goals of the project:
- To map the research outputs and ongoing research at the University of Warwick in relation to their connection(s) to the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.
- To map the research interests of Warwick researchers and their connections to the SDGs, in order to better understand the potential for future research growth.
- Demonstrate Warwick’s current strengths and areas of opportunity for growth in relation to SDG research to create a benchmark for future analysis of contributions.
- Foster a greater awareness of the contribution of research at the University of Warwick to the SDGs and empower researchers to understand their own contributions to the goals, which may help them to communicate research value and impact.
- Use the outcomes of the mapping to enable interdisciplinary research surrounding SDG connections.
