Liberal Arts students explore concepts of beauty through engaging London trip

Liberal Arts students participated in a fieldtrip to London on Tuesday 23 April 2024. Inspired by the new “Beauty” module in the Liberal Arts curriculum, the fieldtrip explored and questioned ideas of beauty throughout history. The field trip included visits to the "Cult of Beauty" exhibition at the Wellcome Collection, the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery, in addition to a dinner organised by the Liberal Arts Society.
During the visit to the "Cult of Beauty" exhibition, students analysed how it portrayed the history of exclusionary ideas of beauty, while also assessing how the Wellcome Collection depicted its own ties to colonising violence and medical and scientific racism.
The visit to the National Portrait Gallery used a decolonising approach to examine the representation of British history and public memory through portraits, the shifts of aesthetic standards throughout history, the erasure of non-White British historical figures and the silencing of the history of slavery and colonialism.
