Profs. Roberta Bivins and Elena Korosteleva meet SLS staff to discuss spotlight opportunities

On 16 October Professor Roberta Bivins and Professor Elena Korosteleva, representing the Health and Sustainability spotlights respectively, were invited to the Warwick Medical School and the School of Life Sciences to discuss the opportunities for engagement and interdisciplinary synergy building. They highlighted the possibilities for interdisciplinary funding, impact and visibility growth, as well as for connecting and training ECRs for more interdisciplinary futures. Prof. Korosteleva drew attention to the launch of ECR Training Academy for Sustainable Futures in November at COP29 in Azerbaijan, Warwick Climate Governance and Policy Network as the ROAD to COP30, and Cross-Spotlight forum in July 2025. IGSD and Sustainability Spotlight hosted an Azerbaijani representative from the COP29 Scientific Council

Azerbaijani Collaboration on Sustainability Initiatives
On 14-16 October IGSD and Sustainability Spotlight hosted Dr Günel Ismailzada from Azerbaijan, a member of the Scientific Council for COP 29, who visited Warwick as a guest of the Sustainability Spotlight initiative. During her visit, Dr Ismailzada gave a seminar, met with the IAS and the International Team to explore opportunities for collaboration. She also engaged with the Steering Group members of the Sustainability Spotlight on developing COLAB3 and the ECR Training Academy for Sustainable Futures in particular. We are excited to grow our Sustainability Training School further, in collaboration with our Azerbaijani partners, and also develop potential projects focused on water scarcity, just transitions, gender equality and climate change, which could provide valuable networking and place- and project-based experiences for our Early Career Researchers (ECRs) especially. Additionally the Sustainability Spotlight meeting launched COLAB5 'The Road to COP30' as a network of Warwick researchers focusing on climate action. Former IGSD Training School Participants Pilot Water Governance and Biodiversity Project in Thailand

A team of early career researchers recently completed a successful hybrid participatory workshop focused on water governance and biodiversity in Bangkok, Thailand. The workshop was organised by former participants of the Institute for Global Sustainable Development (IGSD) Sustainability Training School, with support from the University of Warwick and Thammasat University.

The project, a testament to the impact of the IGSD training, brought together experts from a range of institutions including Mahidol University, Thailand Policy Lab, UNDP Thailand, Asian Institute of Technology, University of Manchester, Monash University, University of Glasgow, Thailand Royal Irrigation Department, GIZ, and Lagos University.

Despite the challenges of coordinating across time zones and amidst ongoing thesis writing, the organisers successfully delivered a valuable learning and collaboration experience.

This pilot project is just one example of the many initiatives led by the IGSD Sustainability Training School participants around the world, demonstrating the lasting impact of the program on fostering sustainable development research and action.
