Information for APP EXP applicants from Physics

Purpose

The Department of Physics has set a goal that as many members of its postgraduate community as possible will achieve Associate Fellowship in the Higher Education Academy by the time they finish their studies. This page is designed to provide you, as a Physics PGR, with the information you need to prepare and submit your case for Associate Fellowship.

Warwick holds accreditation with AdvanceHE, permitting the University to award Associate Fellowship to candidates who have demonstrated that their teaching practice meets Descriptor 1 of the UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF). This accreditation process is managed at Warwick by the Academic Development Centre (ADC).

What you need to do

We have aimed to make the process of drafting your case for Associate Fellowship as straightforward as possible.

What Associate Fellowship asks you to do is:

  • show that your teaching practice demonstrates engagement with two of the Areas of Activity in the UKPSF, at least K1 and K2 in Core Knowledge, and at least V1 and V3 of the Professional Values.
  • Your work needs to be underpinned by a solid understanding of appropriate scholarship of teaching and learning.

The process is as follows:

  1. Complete Preparing to Teach in Higher Education (PTHE) successfully.
  2. Attend APP EXP for Physics workshop or online drop in session.
  3. Engage with your mentor.
  4. Prepare:***
    • Descriptor 1 Self-evaluation.
    • Narrative of Professional Practice looking at two of the five Areas of Activity grounded in pedagogical literature (1400 words max).
  5. Transfer final drafts of the above to the D1 application form.
  6. Get your referees to complete the forms (one form for each of your two referees).
  7. Compile all your work into the D1 application form and additional documents, as detailed on the form.
  8. Submit via the APP EXP Moodle.

*** NB: previous information on this page indicated that you would need to prepare a teaching philosophy statement. This is no longer required if you are making an application via this route.

Once you have submitted, your case for Associate Fellowship will be reviewed by two assessors, at least one of whom will be a Fellow or Senior Fellow of the HEA. They will assess your case for Associate Fellowship based on the critiera outlined in Descriptor 1 of the UKPSF and either recommend that you be awarded Associate Fellowship or indicate that they feel your case does not yet meet the requirements. If it is the latter you will be provided with feedback and invited to re-submit when you have been able to address the feedback. If it is the former, your details will be passed on to AdvanceHE and you will receive a certificate confirming you have Associate Fellowship. You will also be able to use the post-nominal AFHEA!
