Call for Papers: A.I. – Panic or Panacea 

Exchanges has opened a call for papers, critical reflections or conversations on the theme of A.I. – Panic or Panacea, addressed from any disciplinary standpoint or tradition to an interdisciplinary audience. The call is open through to May 2021 for peer-reviewed and August 2021 for editorially reviewed manuscripts. First time and early career authors are especially encouraged to consider submitting work relating to this call. Full details of the call are available on the journal site, or to discuss a potential submission, contact Editor-in-Chief, Dr Gareth J Johnson

Exchanges also welcomes submissions on any topic suitable for an interdisciplinary audience throughout the academic year, with further author guidance available

WIRL COFUND Fellow Isabelle Heyerick: The impact of  the (in)visibility of signed languages and signed language interpreters during the COVID-19 pandemic on new learners' motivation.

WIRL COFUND Fellow, Isabelle Heyerick, has started an additional research project investigating the impact of the (in)visibility of signed languages and signed language interpreters during the COVID-19 pandemic on new learners’ motivation. The enquiry is conducted across six institutions in respectively the UK, Belgium, The Netherlands and Canada. 

Throughout the pandemic Isabelle Heyerick, as vice-president of an organisation offering continued professional development for signed language interpreters in Flanders (Belgium), has rolled out several initiatives. One is a buddy scheme aimed at helping colleagues to navigate the changed landscape of the signed language interpreting profession. Additionally, two webinars on the challenges and demands of online interpreting will go ahead this month. Next month, interpreters can join an online workshop on professional self-care in these unprecedented times. 

New (16th) Issue of Exchanges: The Interdisciplinary Research Journal Arrives 

Exchanges: The Interdisciplinary Research Journal (ISSN 2053-9665) has been published (Volume 8(1), Autumn 2020) by the Institute of Advanced Study.
Written and by and for early career researchers in all disciplines around the world, this issue once again brings an assortment of articles, topics and authors to its broad readership, with strong resonances between the pieces of creativity and language acquisition. Articles this issue deal with areas including:  

  • applications of dramaturgy in studying the creative practitioners 
  • the function of role-play within the acquisition of English as a second language 
  • how non-native speakers of English can embrace and apply their cultural heritage to enhance teaching 
  • a healthy critique of Lehrer’s thesis of the functioning of creativity 

The issue includes an editorial detailing the currently open calls for manuscript submissions.
