This project links Science Faculty academic staff and the Coull Quartet to build interdisciplinary teaching around the links between science and music. As well as developing teaching materials for existing Physics modules, we will work towards a new interdisciplinary module in this area and identify other areas of science and mathematics teaching which could benefit from innovative teaching approaches. Video and audio material will be presented on the project web site and we will develop some practical demonstrations. We are arranging several colloquia involving distinguished invited speakers, such as Chris Redgate who will speak on "Redesigning the Oboe for the 21st Century". Our flagship event will be a one-day meeting on the theme of science / music crossover in teaching, research, composition and technology.

Dr Gavin Bell is a physicist working on advanced materials, particularly one- and two-dimensional systems and hybrid materials combining several useful properties. Gavin previously worked at Imperial College London, where he was also the bass guitarist and sound engineer for the band We All Fall Down. He has an interest in algorithmic music generation.

Dr Rachel Edwards is an associate professor in the Warwick Ultrasound Group. As well as non-contact ultrasound generation, Rachel's work involves cryogenic (low temperature) measurements on advanced materials as a novel method to probe their behaviour.

Prof. Rudolf Roemer is a member of the Physics Theory Group and Centre for Scientific Computing. He is particularly interested in the behaviour of Disordered Quantum Systems, and applies theoretical and computational techniques to a wide variety of problems.

Prof. Paul Harrison leads the Elementary Particle Physics Group at Warwick. His research interests include the behaviour of the Higgs boson and neutrinos. Like Gavin, he plays bass guitar.

Dr Oksana Trushkevych is a Research Fellow in the Ultrasound Group who is developing new sensors for monitoring safety-critical components in the energy industry, with support from the Energy GRP.

Nick Roberts is cellist in the Coull Quartet. He has a long-standing involvement with the music societies at Warwick and in 2013 he played at the premiere of "The Colours of Dark Light", a piece by Edward Cowie inspired by the work of physicist Professor Sir Michael Berry FRS.

Dr Michael Pounds is has a research background in theoretical chemistry and teaching experience at the Universities of Leicester and Surrey. Having returned from a period as Head of Chemistry at a sixth-form boarding school in Shanghai, he is now the first Director of Student Experience in Physics.
