About the Project

What makes playwriting at Warwick University unique and how could it be developed further?

The basic idea of this project is to identify, formulate, and further develop the distinct and innovative creative and pedagogical features of new writing in the School of Theatre and Performance Studies and to explore if these practices could be developed further into a unique Warwick brand.

We are interested in multidimensional aspects of writing for theatre and performance. We explore how the material for a play, as well as solutions for solving structural or other issues in the writing process could come from a variety of places and disciplines (literature, poetry, visual arts, music, history, science, mathematics, daily news, modern media, everyday life, etc.) We examine transferable aspects of playwriting and other forms of creative writing, asking: How could dramaturgical techniques aid structuring of a novel? How can dramatic dialogue and rhythm be explored through techniques of poetry writing? How can we understand different dramaturgical structures through mathematical concepts?

In order to foster links with artists and theatre communities and involve different perspectives and approaches to new writing, this project aims to include a variety of voices from high-profile playwrights and other theatre practitioners to new writers, who have just been emerging from our university.

Winners of the WBS & IATL Playwriting Competition Announced!

Earlier this Summer WBS Create, in partnership with the IATL strategic projects funded initiative Playwriting at Warwick launched a playwriting competition for University of Warwick students. The challenge was to submit a play, of between 7 and 10 minutes in duration, based on one of the School’s cases. The case in question was based on the Bhopal disaster. We were thrilled by both the number, and quality, of plays submitted. The panel certainly had its work cut out for it selecting the winners, that said they are:

First place
Phoebe McIndoe, Year 2 English and Theatre – Babu’s Fountain

Join runner up
Namita Cariappa, Year 3 Management – Obligation or No Obligation
Matt Toms, MSc in Business – The Bhopal Disaster – Five Conversations

Special mention
Sam George, Year 1 Theatre and Performance Studies - It Is Not Our Business

The plays from the winner and runners up will be used in teaching here in WBS next year (they will be used in Critical Issues in Law and Management, IB3A2) and we look forward to inviting Phoebe, Namita and Matt to see them being performed by our students in the classroom.

On the basis of the success of the competition this year, we hope to be able to run it again in 2014/15.
