Facilitating female entrepreneurship in rural Uganda

During her previous volunteering experiences in rural Uganda Sarah Chen participated in engineering related projects such as the design and building of hydropower schemes for remote rural communities. At that time she identified an urgent need to educate and empower women, especially in a rural context, to enable them to gain financial independence. Widowed and single women are particularly vulnerable to sexual exploitation when seeking employment since the majority of employers are male. Female entrepreneurship is an obvious means of circumventing this issue by allowing women to take ownership of their earning potential.

Sarah Chen presented her research at the British Conference of Undergraduate Research (BCUR). See her poster presentation here.
