GrotProv

Samuel Wightman

In this research project, we are seeking to bring together different performance styles to explore the expressive body and the how this can communicate ideas surrounding the body’s relationship with the mind.

Using the practices of contact improvisation and the theories of Jerzy Grotowski we intend to develop a unique performance aesthetic with an ensemble culminating in a final performance supported by musicians playing live improvised music.

By bringing in outside practitioners and contributors from other areas of
study, we hope to understand more wholly how we process mental impulses and how they manifest themselves in the codified body.

Equally, we are interested in our ability to suppress the manifestation of this instinct, a subject area which is inherent in both Grotowski’s work and contact improvisation.
