  4. Hybrid Refrigeration and Heat pump systems.
  5. Compact Ammonia storage modules for SCR in automotive.
  6. Energy Storage.

PhD Projects

  1. Development of Advanced hybrid refrigeration and heat pump systems. The aim of this project consists of developing of two advanced heat driven hybrid refrigeration and heat pump systems. Each proposed conceptual hybrid system combines both thermal compressor and turbo-compressor. One of the key focus of the current research is on the following aspects: - Turbo-compressor development including lab bench demonstration (as Heat pump or Water chiller) - Refrigerants pair selection; - System cost analysis; - Prototype specifications of Gas fired advanced heat Pump for up to 40 kW.

The PhD project will be on one or two aspects of the overall project.

  1. Development of novel adsorbents for refrigeration, heat pump systems and Energy storage applications.

  2. Solar heating and cooling (components or systems)

Biography

Dr Z. Tamainot-Telto (CEng, MIMechE, MIoR) is Associate Professor in Refrigeration, Heat Pump and Energy Conservation. He was previously trained in France at University of Nancy I, National Polytechnic Institute of Lorraine (INPL-Nancy) and National Institute of Applied Sciences (INSA-Lyon) where he completed his PhD (1993). His early research work was on the development of cost effective variable cooling load of conventional air conditioning systems in partnership with EDF. Since 1994, he has contributed to modelling, designing, building and testing successful proof of concept prototypes through numerous research grants: EU SOCOOL Project (ENK5-CT-2002-00632) for the 5 kW chiller using waste heat from exhaust of a gas fired co-generator ; EU-TOPMACS Project (TST4-CT-2005-012394) for a 2 kW cooling air conditioning unit for the Fiat Stilo car using waste heat from engine coolant and US Army Project (W911QY-2007-C-0073) for a 2 kW cooling solar driven mobile container (4m3) for food storage in the desert. He has been involved in industrial projects for development of compact Ammonia storage modules for NOx conversion through Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) in automotive and public funded project for development of Smart Hybrid Refrigeration Systems (EPSRC - EP/J000876/1). He has contributed to numerous papers in international journals and Proceedings including 2 patents and 1 book chapter.
