The flow and arrest of visco-plastic and granular materials
Gravitationally-driven slumping of visco-plastic and granular materials is examined theoretically and experimentally to examine how the flow is progressively retarded and how it may eventually arrest. Key features are the distance travelled by the flow when it stops (the runout distance) and the time it takes to reach this distance - and it will be shown how these can be related to the initial conditions and mechanical properties of the slumping material.
