Phase Transitions in Vibrated Granular Media

We describe a novel liquid-gas phase transition in a collection of monodisperse particles vibrated between two glass plates. Simulations are found to capture this behaviour and can be used to extract the mechanism responsible for the instability. We also discuss how far ideas from equilibrium thermodynamics can be applied or extended to this non-equilibrium system.
