Efficiency of damping devices against human-induced dynamic excitation
Dynamic force signals induced by humans, either by walking, jumping, running or bouncing activities, are characterised by narrow-band frequency content. These forces can cause excessive vibration of slender low-frequency structures, such as footbridges, staircases, grandstands, and long-span floors. Some passive damping devices are still being designed to suppress the vibration response under a harmonic stationary (i.e. idealised) dynamic force. This project aims to investigate the performance of damping devices under realistic forcing conditions, such as a moving nature of the force (in case of running and walking activities) as well as narrow-band nature of the frequency spectrum.
