Sustainable Development and Use of Underground Space

As explosive urbanisation continues around the world, space demand in cities will necessitate increasing utilisation of underground space. Professor Eddie will describe current and future uses and explore the current challenges surrounding effective planning. He will present current best practice in respect of materials and processes and will identify several research topics which could bring about a dramatic reduction in the cost of tunnelling.

Tunnelling and Underground Space is the fastest infrastructure growth sector, but currently suffers from a lack of skilled engineers. Warwick is one of leading institutions tackling this skills shortage and Professor Eddie will discuss his vision for future engagement with industry; both in research and teaching.

Professor Eddie was formerly the Engineering Director of the UK’s largest tunnelling organisation and now runs a specialist consultancy offering a range of engineering services to Clients around the world.
