EPSRC Fellowships (Established Career)

Click here for EPSRC Fellowships Guide for Applicants

Applications for these awards are invited only in specific research areas that are linked to the EPSRCs strategic priorities. The areas in which fellowships are available are updated biannually. This scheme employs a person specification to describe the desired attributes for each career stage rather than using the number of years after award of degree. EPSRC has defined three career stages (postdoctoral, early and established career) and the attributes expected at each stage (see Guide for Applicants link above).
  • Eligibility:
    • Applicants are expected to hold a PhD or have equivalent research experience; however, there are no eligibility rules based on years of post-doctoral experience or whether applicants hold (or do not hold) a permanent academic position.
    • There are no nationality restrictions imposed by EPSRC.
  • Award Duration: Up to 5 years
  • Funding Available:
    • There are no restictions on the level of funding that is able to be requested under this scheme. Applicants may request related costs for the programme of research throughout the fellowship.
    • Costs associated with the Established Career award may include research staff, technicians, visiting researchers, co-applicants, travel and subsistence, equipment (within the current EPSRC guidelines) consumables, access to facilities and technical support costs.
Deadline: There are no deadlines for this scheme - applications may be submitted at any time. Two prioritisation panels are held each year in January/February and July. Applicants should aim to submit a minimum of 4 months prior to the prioitisation panel they wish their application to be reviewed at.

Royal Society Leverhulme Trust Senior Research Fellowships

The Royal Society Leverhulme Trust Senior Research Fellowships were established through the generosity of the Leverhulme Trust and seek to provide opportunities for academic researchers to be relieved of all their teaching and administrative duties, to enable them to concentrate on full-time research for up to one year. Preference will be given to candidates who, as well as demonstrating scientific excellence, can show that such relief is particularly needed and timely. Applications from mid-career candidates are particularly encouraged. Seven awards are offered per year.
  • Eligibility:
    • Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent and hold a permanent post at an UK university or eligible not-for-profit institution.
    • This is a senior fellowship scheme, and therefore applicants must be at a stage in their career when they have a well-established, fully independent research programme of their own, and would particularly benefit from a period of full-time research.
    • Applicants should not have had sabbatical leave or other support relieving them from teaching and administrative duties for a total of one year or more in the three years preceding submission of the application.
  • Award Duration: Between one academic term and one year
  • Funding Available: The fellow's employing institution will be reimbursed for the full salary costs for the applicant (up to the equivalent of the minimum point on the lectureship scale as paid by the host university). Research expenses up to a maximum of £2,500 are available to cover costs of consumables, equipment, travel etc.
Deadline: Applications are usually due in January.

Royal Society Industry Fellowships

The Industry Fellowship scheme aims to enhance knowledge transfer in science and technology between those in industry and those in academia. It provides opportunities for an academic scientist to work on a collaborative project with industry, or someone employed in industry to work on a collaborative project with a university department or not-for-profit research organisation. It is anticipated that fellows will establish personal and corporate links between the two sectors in the UK as a foundation for their long-term future development.
  • Eligibility: Applicants can be of any nationality and should be at a stage in their career when they would particularly benefit from establishing or strengthening personal and corporate links between the two sectors as a foundation for long-term future collaboration and development. They should hold a PhD or be of equivalent standing in their profession and hold a permanent post in either a UK university, a not-for-profit research organisation (e.g. the Marine Biological Association) or UK industry.
  • Award Duration: Awards can be for any period up to two years’ full-time or pro rata, i.e. could be held at 50% part-time for four years enabling fellows to maintain links with their employing institution more easily.
  • Funding Available: The fellow’s basic salary only will be paid during the secondment; the employing institution continues to pay national insurance and pension contributions. Research expenses may be claimed up to the value of £2,000 per year.
Deadline: Applications are usually due in March and September

RAEng Industrial Secondments

The Industrial Secondment Scheme provides an invaluable opportunity for early- to mid-career academics to undertake a collaborative research project in an industrial environment. The scheme aims to strengthen the strategic relationship between the university and the industry host by providing an opportunity to establish or enhance collaborative research between the two parties.

The secondment will facilitate knowledge transfer between industry and academia and will enable the awardee to gain first-hand experience of working in an industrial environment and knowledge of current industry practices, thereby enabling the secondee to improve the quality and industrial relevance of their teaching.

  • Eligibility:

    • Applicants should hold a permanent academic post at a UK university.
    • Applicants should be early to mid-career academics (lecturer, reader or equivalent). Professorial candidates are not eligible for this scheme.
    • Applicants should be currently teaching engineering at undergraduate or postgraduate level at a UK university.
    • Applicants must have a minimum of two years teaching experience.
    • The industry host must have a significant presence in the UK. The secondment must be conducted within the UK.The industry host can be of any size as long as the organisation can demonstrate that it will provide the secondee with an appropriate working environment.
  • Award Duration: Awards can be held up to six months full-time or part time up to 12 months.
  • Funding Available: The Academy will contribute up to a maximum of £30,000 towards the salary costs (excluding overheads) of the applicant paid pro rata against the amount of time to be spent at the industry host.
Deadline: Applications are usually due in January
