Warwick Funding Sources

A number of research funding sources are available internally to University staff and students.

WARWICK IMPACT FUND

There are three types of award available in this funding stream:

a) Impact Development Awards – Rolling funds available for modest support for impact activity specifically related to the University Strategy and Global Priority Programmes (GRPs). This is likely to be business focused, although not exclusively (maximum £10,000).

b) Strategic Impact Awards – A competition to provide pump-priming support for the development of new impact activities and initiatives which are creative and innovative and clearly of a strategic nature. Projects should ideally be of an inter- or multi-disciplinary nature and must show clearly that they have the potential to lead directly to future bids for external funding. Applications which relate specifically to the University Strategy and to areas covered by the GPPs are particularly encouraged (maximum £50,000).

c) Proof of Concept Awards – The Warwick Impact Fund 2011-15 allowed for funding applications for POC, applications for this funding must now go directly to Warwick Ventures (Contact Quentin Compton-Bishop, Chief Executive Officer, Warwick Ventures: Q.M.Compton-Bishop@warwick.ac.uk x75482).

WARWICK RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT FUND

This funding stream has two seperate parts:

a) Strategic Awards – An annual competition to provide pump-priming support for the development of new research initiatives which are creative and innovative and clearly of a strategic nature. Projects should ideally be of an inter- or multi-disciplinary nature and must show clearly that they will lead directly to future bids for external funding. Applications which relate specifically to the University Strategy are particularly encouraged. Applicants may bid for pump-priming funds up to £25,000.

b) Development Awards – Rolling funds available for modest support for strategic research activity which will lead to external funding applications. Applications which seek support for the development of larger scale European funding bids are particularly encouraged, and some RDF funds will be ringfenced to support this activity. There is no formal limit attached to this scheme but this is a smaller scheme than the Strategic Awards and applicants are encouraged to be measured in their funding requests.

IAS EARLY CAREER FELLOWSHIPS

This programme supports Warwick doctoral candidates in the transition phase between their doctoral and postdoctoral careers. Fellows are expected to advance the development of their research careers by writing research publications, conference papers, job applications, and postdoctoral fellowship/grant proposals - while engaging with the interdisciplinary activities of Warwick’s Institute of Advanced Study (IAS). The Fellowships are available on a part-time basis, and can be held in conjunction with part-time (up to 50%) employment within or outside the University. A 6-10 month bursary payment is provided to allow Fellows to participate in the Academic Careers and Employment (ACE) programme, convened by the IAS.

Applicants must have submitted their thesis for examination prior to the commencement of the fellowship programme (usual start date October or May). See guidance document for full details (to be released shortly).

There are 2 calls for applications per year, closing in January and May.

Eligibility:
  • The competition is open to Warwick students registered for a research-based doctorate at Warwick (excluding the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology).
  • Candidates should not be in full-time employment during the Fellowship, but may hold contracts of up to 50%, either at Warwick or outside the University.
  • Continuation of the Fellowship beyond the doctoral examination is contingent upon successful completion of the viva (ie a recommendation to award the PhD or other doctoral degree with or without minor corrections, but NOT a recommendation to resubmit/referral).
  • Candidates are required to live within a reasonable distance of the University, so as to participate in IAS and Graduate School activities as appropriate.
  • Candidates must be eligible for residence and work in the UK during their award.
  • Candidates may only apply twice to this scheme.
